Chronic heart burn
Hello Mareen. This is common for many of us and needs treatment from your doctor.

But I also have heart problems my blood pressure is high so they have upped my BP tablets from 4mg to 32mg I have. Never felt so useless I have allways my copd well xx

Thank you its good to know that it is common I have never had it this bad before and I think I am panicking because of waiting for heart scan thinking Aldsworth xx
Lansoprazole doesn't work for me. Only thing that does is Rennies. I am not allowed to have Gaviscon. Can't remember the reason.
Hi Mareen, please go and see your GP. Take care. 😊 xxx Bernadette
Take care Maureen do you sleep upright it not easy but may help
I will give it a try thank you
I take Ranitidine twice daily and have just been prescribed Mucogel to take after meals, Its a liquid like Gaviscon which seems to help.
Heartburn causes tiny droplets of stomach acid to be breathed in and apparently this is more corrosive even than battery acid and can cause dreadful lung damage. So it is absolutely essential that heartburn is effectively suppressed. Both my respiratory consultants say this &because I have a real problem with reflux they insist I take double-dose Nexium plus 300mg Ranitidine daily. I don't like taking so much but can't afford to get more lung damage.
Thank you for the advice
Reflux is very common in IPF patients. The treatment described by Hanne above is very commom among IPF patients i.e. double dose PPI (i.e lansaprazole) sometimes twice a day, plus an H2 blocker (ranitidine 150-300mg - usually at night) as well as Gaviscon (the one with alginate) after meals.
When you take PPI (lansaprozole) migh be important for full effect. For some PPI they should be on taken on empty stomach about 30-60mins before eating in morning and 30-60min before evening meal (if taking twice a day) for maximal effect. Not certain same is true for lansaprazole. The ranitidine is taken at night before bed to block night time reflux that might be resistant to PPIs. Finally, for the gaviscon with alginate its important that you do not drink anything after you take it as its supposed to line the oesophagus and if you drink its washed away.
Also, have you been checked for a hiatus hernia or been checked to see if you have a bug that needs to be treated with antibiotics (test requires tube down throat) ?
I suffered terrible reflux for many years. No heartburn but constant burning in chest and stomach with pains. Many visits to hospital as told pain was caused by angina. I took lanzoparole which did not do anything then respiratory nurse explained the trouble reflux can cause. Recommended I stopped lanzaprazole and started esomeprazole with increased dose from 30 to 40 twice a day and I wondered why I suffered so long. Difference is unbelievable no more chest pains or burning with constant belching. I feel I have been given a miracle drug and just hoping that this relief will continue. I have ipf.
i have COPD in 2011 I had heart burn for a long time inn the end i tried to call the Dr in. in the end my husband to me to A & E who after 4 days took me down to have a camera put down my throat. I woke up 5 days later in ICU, my gallbladder had turned Gangrene than they took it out there and then. since then I have taken lansoprazol
Hi the doctor did mention having a camera down my throat but I am due a cat scan next week and waiting for my BP to go down for a heart scan this all started when I had high BP and they have increased my BP tablets
Hi, I ave problems with heartburn and acid reflux. I've tried Lansoprazole and another of the same family. Neither were any use. At present I have Ranitidine on prescription and I also take Gaviscon double action when I feel the need.
The problem as I see it is, the damage done to the esophagus when the reflux occurs. And to be awkward it always happens during the night. A glass of milk on the bedside table is a must.
The constant refluxing can cause problems to the muscles in the throat too. Making breathing a little haphazard and difficult.
Cheers,
Thank you for your reply I don't feel quite so alone l will speak to my gp about different medication next week image bought some. Gaviscon today
