Hello, Went to Uganda Africa 2 years ago. and went to Israel this last fall. Thinking seriously of going to Alaska this year. Traveling and staying in the last two trips wasn't to hard on my lungs. Little concerned about Alaska any one have any suggestions? Live in the mid north U S so it would not be a real long distance.

Sounds wonderful, tvernstrom. Don't know much about Alaska, but would love to hear how you get on.

The tourist season there is short. May to September at best. I went in June and was fine, the air is so clean. Despite being prepared I wasn't bitten by mozzies at all and boy do they normally make a meal of me. Take your meds, do the research of where the nearest medical care facilities are and enjoy it. I would go back in a heartbeat. Most beautiful place I've ever been.

I've wanted to go to Alaska since I listened to a travel podcast about cruising up the coast in a small cruise ship that could get to the places the big cruise ships can't get to. Not sure what the cold air will do for your lungs.

I would love to go there too sounds wonderful, I think the short summer months can be quite warm there, I'd love to see the whales swimming in their natural environment xx

Do you remember the TV series Northern Exposure ? It was set in Alaska, although filmed in Washington State I think. That and lots of other movies I've seen would make me love to go there too. In summer cold air shouldn't be a problem but imagine how clear and pollution free ? You're dead right about travelling while you still can. Carpe Diem and hit the road, running :) Well, maybe not ruining :)

Two years ago, in July, my husband and I went on an Alaskan cruise of the inner passage. Even in July, you need to dress warm (average temp 65 day/35 night). It was beautiful, so much land that wasn't developed, so the air was very clean. I would like to go back and see Fairbanks and Denali national park.

We've traveled south and out west several times and I have lived in the east. We live in Iowa now. I am amazed what a diversed landscape this country has. From mountains to deserts. From temps of 110 degrees in Arizona to -50 degrees in Alaska. I am amazed.

Go and enjoy, Beth

Cruise +train is an excellent way to see Alaska for the first time. The big cruise lines have a medical care available and will take care of almost everything, including connection to the Alaska railway to the interior and Denali National Park. Be prepared to put up with the cruise ship's annoying emphasis on shopping. Otherwise stops and shore excursions were perfectly fine. Alaska would be a little iffy to deal with driving because of the great distances (and the capital is not even accessible by car.) The train journey from Seward to Fairbanks is too beautiful to try describing, as is the sea journey through Glacier Bay. The mosquitos in Denali are indeed unbelievable.

I have a close friend who lives in cold bay, her husband has copd but seems to manage pretty well although he has a chest infection at the moment. I would consider where you are going in Alaska and if you are able to take a rescue pack with you as not every where has a doctor (cold bay for one)
