Hi. Yes GERD can cause breathing issues. The Acid created by you stomach travels through your esophagus causing irritation and coughing. Your doctor will probably have given you medication to control the reflux such as Omeprazole or esomeprazole. Lansaprozole is another GERD medication. The food you eat is usually a cause of gastric reflux so try and reduce the acid producing foods in your diet.

Offcourse the doctors gave me some acid blockers now the heart burn and sore taste are subsided but the breathing problems are remains .in 2018 due to GERD i had a lymph nodes in my throat but afer had meditation it was completely gone .but now it's difficult to inhale .so that i have to take frequent sighs .i feel like enough air is not reaching on my lungs .can GERD cause inflammation in the voice box ? Can it cause difficulty breathing ??

Yes it can cause asthma like symptoms and your esophagus and voice box is probably inflamed. I would go back to your doctor and tell him/her about your continuing problems.

Gerd can cause shortness of breath . When you went to see your doctor for a gastro check up did they advise you about raising the head end of your bed ?

Raise just the head end of your bed if possible on two bricks either side ...just so your head is raised.

Sleep with one pillow only..

What your experiencing is the gastric contents of your stomach coming up ..if you follow the above it should help other than that speak to your GP or practice nurse... it's worth a try

Years ago I had the reflux problems at night. This was eventually followed by lung disease. I find I have better results if I take Lanzanzaprol in the evening . It seems to work better for me . Perhaps you could keep a record of your problems and ask the Dr again in a couple of months . Good luck

Hi vishnuGkl,I've had GERD since I was in my 30s and it can cause discomfort with breathing, hoarseness as well as heartburn etc. The acid can cause inflammation of the epiglottis and esophagus so if the acid is trying to come up you could feel very uncomfortable at times. I can only echo what others have said, go back to your doctor, raise your sleeping position and above all have a good look at your diet. There's lots of foods that can affect GERD, with me, citrus fruits and drinks, any kind of alcohol, spicy food, fried food, chocolate, coffee. I take omeprazole twice a day and gaviscon advance 4 times a day. Everyone is different and won't be effected in the same way. While your medication will help control the symptoms, changing diet etc will help to manage any flareups you may have. If you feel breathless, try not to panic, I find leaning forward slightly helps it pass.

Good luck, I hope you improve soon.

You are welcome vishnuGkl, I understand about your breathing, I have the same problem, that's why I suggested leaning forward which can help if you feel short of breath. There is no need to feel confused or scared, even though you may feel anxious about it. it is often a symptom of GERD, which can cause Asthma like symptoms so you should speak to your doctor again. Please don't be worrying as it could make you feel worse.

Try peppermint tea after eating too, as this may help.

It is possible the foods that are causing the Gerd may also be causing some gas and bloating which can put pressure on your diaphragm and make it a bit more difficult to take a real deep or full breath, at least from my own experience.

Hi, hope your feeling better, I read your post and can completely relate. I gave breathing in issues same as you, I have tightness in chest and stomach. I was told this is due to acid reflux. I have started on omeprazole and take gaviscon to control the symptoms. I've been suffering for many years with reflux, but about 2 years ago the breathing problem started and I've been suffering ever since. How are you now, and have you managed to control your symptoms?

Hi vishnuGkl, I can see your post is 3 years old but I saw your post just now. I had terrible breathing problems and that too, during Covid. Like you, I suffer from Acid Reflux. I was gasping for air most of the time or pressed on a sofa or furniture to help me breathe. GPs did not know why I was having breathing problems nor did the lung specialist. The breakthrough came after I started eating a big bowl of SKYR, an Icelandic yoghurt every morning and later ate my breakfast. It was my miracle cure. I ate this for a good year. I now don't anymore and I am ok. I do occasionally have some breathing problems but nothing compared to what I had before and I just put a few drops of Olbas oil on a tissue and breathe this and it does help. I am hoping you don't have this problem any more but if you still do, I hope my tips go some where to help you. All the best and good health.

Hi sorry to but in, I notice that my breathing gets bad and my ribs hurt and mu back with acid reflux but I'm not prescribed anything, went to doctors about how bloated my belly gets and he prescribed omeprozole and that was that but that wasn't on repeat prescription and last few days my belly has been massively bloated x

Hi Yumz199725, from my understanding of the acid reflux point of view, I think you ought to be under PIP meds, like omeprozole for a while. I am not medically trained, but the bloating has probably not got to do with reflux. I think this needs to be investigated, it could be for a number of reasons. One that springs to mind, is IBS. Do go back to your doctor and have this investigated. If there is anything else I can help you with, please do not hesitate. Wishing you all the best.

Thanks x I have been to doctors about it but not been back since I am due a blood test on 26th so if there's anything it will show up in the blood. It's to check for anemia, I was told that bloating is to do with acid reflux?? I'm more worried its to do with my heart if I'm honest cause I do have a leak in my stomach one of the valves leading up to heart it happend during my procedure to fix the stenosis x anway I'm rambling lol. Thanks for your help and take care x

Morningrose in reply toYumz199725

Hi Yumz199725, I am not aware that acid reflux can cause bloating. I would more associate this with bowel issues. I think the leak should be checked. My feeling is that you ought to have an overall check up, so one by one, potential prognosis has to be ruled out. It could have to do with heart, bowel or just acid reflux. I hope you get yourself sorted out, have relevant treatment and have peace of mind. Best wishes.

Oh I forgot to mention along with Skyr, I was also taking Esomeprazole 40mg twice a day and liquid Gasviscon 10ml, 4 times a day as prescribed by my doctor. I was told by the gastro specialist to take the last dose of Gaviscon just before bedtime. All this did help. I now only take 40 Esomeprazole as and when required and same for Gaviscon. Hope all this helps.
