How long is a piece of string? You will probably last a lot longer if you don't smoke and have a healthy lifestyle.. There are many people on here still with a good quality of life and have been living for many years at the severe and very severe level. Most people die with copd these days rather than from it. Unless you want to live to be 120 that is! x

You are very lucky to have been diagnosed at the 'moderate stage' because it gives you time to do something about it. Many here were unaware until they were 'severe'. If you stop smoking and take regular exercise you can slow the disease right down and live for many years, probably dying of something else altogether. As coughalot2 says, a piece of string.

I notice from your profile that you were diagnosed with Copd 2 years ago.

I wholeheartedly agree with the others, you must stop smoking if you want to help yourself.

Good luck & let us know how you get on 🌻

Hi , my mum has had copd for year's, last year she couldn't get out of the house for coughing and short of breath even trying to get around the house,

She smoked but gave up about 5 months ago and now she is like a different person , she still has copd and takes regular medication still, but she can now get out and about.

What a difference to her since she stopped smoking, she went to a smoking sensation nurse every week she stopped using champex I think it's called, it a tablet and it worked for her, she had tried many times over the years but thank fully this really helped her.

Everyone is different but there are are lots of things that you can get from your gp to help you stop sometimes it takes trying various types until you find the one that helps you.

I used to smoke as well,i have asthma I spent a fortune over the years with alternative therapies to try and help me to stop, but I truthfully didn't really want to, the more I was told to stop the more I smoked, I had acupuncture, hypnotherapy and eveything that was on the market ,

I eventually stopped using nicorette quick mist spray, I used to have the packet of cigarettes and the spray together and would think if I really needed to have a cigarette or use the spray, eventually I just used the spray .

Good luck, remember that its only you that can help yourself with not smoking but I know that its not easy , especially when you have family and friends getting on at you about it, I think that was what used to make me smoke more ,

Once you come to terms with having copd and get on medication from your gp, there are lots of treatments to help, unfortunately smoking can really irritate and cause flare ups.

All the best loraine x

Good morning Mollie,

A warm welcome to you:-)

Hidden ......Exactly what I was going to say Bev. Nothing at all to be scared about. I'm not. I'm moderate. I smoked heavily for 50 years. Stop smoking now. Get on with your life. Use what medication you have been offered; exercise and diet are important to keep your lungs working at full strength but this is just living sensibly anyway. Ask your Nurse or Doctor about PR classes, and you will learn so much more how to help yourself....plus any worries, come back here and ask - there is so much help and advice available from others with COPD.

:-)

Good morning Mollie

I can only repeat all the above posts, I am severe and coping quite well. I am now doing more in life than before I was diagnosed. Nothing to be scared of, stop worrying, worrying WILL make you ill.

Everyone is different. I have had COPD for 17 years I am just in severe catagory. If you give up smoking, eat healthily, excercise when you can you can go on for years. I still do a lot, albeit slower. So don't worry xx

welcome to the site we have many members at all different stages of the condition.

Giving up smoking will be the biggest and best thing you can do for your illness. A survey I saw said people who gave up smoking with support were less likely to start smoking again. I gave up with the help of a quit clinic and champix 11 years ago.

After giving up smoking I took up swimming and I still go swimming now its a good exercise for your lungs also ask your GP to refer you to a PR course the information you gain will help you manage your condition

Thank you all very much for your kind words and support today is the day I change my life around no more cigs for me .

Xx

I was diagnosed in 2007 when my body was completely shutting down. I gave up smoking back then I'm still here now, so as long as you look after yourself, you have many years ahead of you

Hi ,a lot of what your life holds for you is in your hands ,the first and best thing you can do to help yourself is stop smoking now ,then eat healthy and exercise ,I was diagnosed back in 1992 ,I'm now aged 71 and go to the gym ,,I used to go twice a week and do 3Kim on the treadmill ,3 on the bike ,3 on the hand bike ,1000 meters on the rower and a couple of the machines , then go home shattered and do very little afterwards ,,,,,then after speaking to the copd nurse and the trainer at the gym I was advised to do a bit less,,,,but more often ,so I now go 3/4 times a week and I do 1klm on the treadmill ,3 on the bike ,3 on the hand bike ,and one of the machines , this takes me about 40 minutes ,and I try to do just a little bit ( even a few extra steps ) each time ,,,,this has helped me greatly ,in fact I had tests in September my levels were 63 ,,, then I started the new gym time table and tests in December showed an increase to 76 ,so I am more than happy with that ,,,,ASK your gp to refer you to pulmary rehab you will learn a lot about your/our condition and you will benefit from it greatly ,,,,,remember it's not a death sentence, , we live with our condition,,,,with the emphasis on live ,if I can do what I do with my lung condition ( and other health problems ) then trust me LIFE IS GOOD ,

There is a stop smoking site on here called Quit. They are very good and help and support you while trying to give up. x
