Vitimin D for COPD
Think vitimin D is more to protect your bones than for the copd. I seem to get prescribed it quite frequently now,=.
Read: Vitamin D3 supplementation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ViDiCO): a multicentre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial
thelancet.com/journals/lanr...
This research concluded:
'Vitamin D3 supplementation protected against moderate or severe exacerbation, but not upper respiratory infection, in patients with COPD with baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels of less than 50 nmol/L. Our findings suggest that correction of vitamin D deficiency in patients with COPD reduces the risk of moderate or severe exacerbation.'
In other words, if your vitamin D is low a supplement helps reduce the risk of exacerbation.
Well I can only say what I know and that is that I have been given Steroxol-D3 on many occasions, always told it is to help with bone density, lack of sunshine makes bones weak. If its supposed to help decrease exacerbations can't say I have noticed. But if its helpful to some of us then that is so good.
I'm not taking it at the moment but I'm going to ask about at my next lung function test as I do think I'm low in this vitamin as I'm so tired all the time
I take vitamin D for my chemical imbalance didn't think it would help my copd.
Vitamin D helps with all sorts of thing Tiredness, Pains (arthritis eg. ) how you feel . Plus loads more
Hope you are all breathing well. Hugs to all
Chris
Yes I am and hr certainly helpsxxx
Vitamin D3 is a magic vitamin which helps with many things. Ive read more than once (sorry, no link) that people with copd are frequently deficient in it. The RDA (recommended daily amount) is considered low by many alternative practitioners. I take 3000 iu every day, summer and winter. Since doing so, Ive not had a chest infection nor taken ABs for 21 months (except for knee infection). I also take other supplements so not sure what caused the change but I had two consecutive winters before then with 3 and 5 infections respectively including 2 lots of pneumonia. Since that time just a couple of fairly mild upper respiratory infections. Of course it could all change in a heartbeat and could be struck down again . . .
PS: Im obviously not in a position to recommend 3000iu, it's just the amount I started taking - I have been well since then, so have carried on.
I would point out though that too much vitamin D can be dangerous so it's best to check with your doctor before taking it.
It might also interfere with some meds too. x
That's why I kept it personal Bev. Any supplements should always be checked with your GP. Will google how much is dangerous and interactions.
Right, a few more factoids gleaned from various sites. In trying to research this, its quite hard as a lot of the interactions are inconsistent across different sites or the drug interactions are differently described. You can google the British National Formulary, the prescribing guidelines which lists all drugs available in the UK and it lists some interactions.
Re the amount, reputable U.S. sites like Mayo Hospital say 4000iu is the upper limit (I take 3000 iu) but I can't find this upper limit on any UK sites and the RDA, as stated in my reply above, is much lower than that - 800 iu.
One of the main reasons I take quite a large amount is that reflux medication which I take is notorious for making it harder to absorb VitD from your food (also calcium, Vit B12 and other nutrients). However Vit D3 supplements can react with the aluminium in ppis (lansoprozole etc), so best to take Vit D3 two hours away from taking a reflux medication.
Vit D3 seems to interact if you take water pills and can make too much calcium go into your blood risking among other things, kidney stones.

This site shows a range of trials/articles where 50,000 iu week for 6-8 weeks helped breathlessness in adults with copd. After that in the one I read, they went on to take 800 iu daily. 50,000, mind boggling.
Hi O2, just wondering whether you have heard of a product called silicolgel for reflux etc. Unlike Omeprezole and the like it is made from natural properties and, from what I gather, does not prevent absorption of nutrients.
Regards JP.
I take it D regularly ,very good for combating colds and building immune system but I haven't noticed any improvement with the COPD.
Hi all am quite a newbie to this and still waiting final diag. At present working on basis of CTD and Broncho... something can't remember spelling! Also Fibromyalgia Osteo Arthritis Psoriasis Crohns Colitis Ischemic Heart disease type 2 diabetes and peripheral neuropathy the CTD is Lupus. With regard to vit D my Rheumy who is brilliant was insistent that this is essential whilst having high dose steroid infusions to protect among other things the head of the thigh bone? Also not to take at the same time as esomeprazole or colesevelam at least four hour gap between. Interesting about the other stuff it does. Am quite scared at moment and a little depressed with all this Hubby is a wonder and couldn't do without him but bit worried where it's all going. Dreadful Fybroday yesterday and infusion made me feel very emotional and weepy and I don't do tears often!!!!love reading all your comments n stories... really helps x
I am currently sucking an ActalD3 tablet which is said to contain calcium too. I take 2 per day since my hip operation to prevent bone thinning. If they help with my Copd then so much the better. I was prescribed them in hospital.
I have just been prescribed vitamin D3 after having ct scans and blood tests because of my emphysema and ibs/ digestive problems and feeling tired all the time, only been on them for a week so no improvements yet but time will tell
will give more info after I've seen the doctor
