Singulair for Mild COPD

Currently struggling with morning wheeze & nocturnal symptoms. I don't know why because little has changed.

Years ago I tried Singulair but its efficacy was overshadowed by my anxiety about my breathing at the time. It was deemed not to work and stopped.

Last night I thought I'd give it another shot, I slept well and my breathing at rest /wheezing (or lack of) this morning is much better.

I did however wake up anxious so I hope this passes as I know some have difficulty with this med in this regard. I do have a pediatric version of it here from my children I may drop down to if this happens.

Have any of you had success with Singulair?

Good day ck

I am not familiar with Singulair, but I hope it helps you at this time, don't hesitate to chat with your doctor by telephone appointment should your breathing deteriorate though.

Some one else who uses singulair may be along to share their experience with you, in addition you could contact one of the nurses on the BLF helpline , I am sure they will be able to advise.

Best wishes BK

Hi I have taken singular regularly for 6 yrs now at 9pm and it opens my airway at night although I also have to raise the bed to slightly elevated due to bronchiectasis

Thanks for the response…

I have taken it for 20+ years. Never had a problem with it. no adverse effects or no anxiety. I tried to NOT take it and I seemed a bit worse off. Between the Singulair, Spiriva and Advair, I take daily, the Singular helps the least. The Spiriva helps the most and the Advair (500), second best. They all seem to work together to give a good outcome.

Good to hear, I’m tolerating it well finger crossed and my tidal breathing has improved

Good to hear. Also, FYI, I was getting "flareups" constantly until I went to a new pulmonologist and he prescribed a daily dose of Daliresp. Now no more flareups. NOTE that he started me on 250 MCG a day, the first month. It was very hard to tolerate with many side affects. I suffered it through only because it DID keep me out of the hospital. Then the 2nd month, I was suppose to take 500MCGs......Oh that was really bad and I could only do it for 10 days. BUT: I found that all I need is 1/3 of the 250MCG pill each night, and it has kept me out of the hospital with no flareups for over a year and a half, now. Daliresp is an antibiotic.

Has it helped your breathing at all?

in reply tock101

Yes it has helped. When I was getting flareups, I could barely breathe and have to be admitted to the hospital. That was happening every 2 to 3 weeks!

I’ve taken Montelukast (Singulair as sold in UK) for about seven years, since I lived near a factory pumping out formaldehyde daily and my asthma got worse and worse, struggled to control, Montelukast added to other meds seemed to help, though I had to get through vivid dreams for about three months. Three years ago, I moved house, right away from that factory and others, and my asthma caused me less problems but I’ve never been able to reduce my inhalers, and scared to try giving up the Montelukast.

I’ve had a recent few months of end to end antibiotics due to a face injury and dental problems. One was metronidazole , which caused anxiety for me. I’m allergic to penicillin and erythromycin causes me serious side effects, so really needed to stick with it.

I decided to stop taking my montelukast because thought might help, and have wondered whether I still need it, after success of house move etc. and knowing it causes anxiety too in some folks.

End of story, the anxiety continued till metronidazole completed, but I stuck without Montelukast for another week until my asthma became more prevalent in my day, as it hadn’t in quite a while. Got nervous and reinstated Montelukast, and asthma settled within a few days. Seems to be a ‘silent’ drug but I’ve proved I think that it works for me….experiment over!
