Anyone know about DLCO/VA + hyperinflation?

Looking at my PFTs, I see that under the Diffusion heading, my DLCO was 85% of Predicted and my DLCO/VA was in the red at 76% predicted. Does anyone know what this means?

(My Spirometry results were good (FEV1/FVC was 98% predicted).

My lungs show hyperinflation on the Xray.

You can have good lung volume but is co2 oxygen transfer is bad you lung volume mean nothing.

The saying you lung volume is good but ya co2 oxygen transfer is low but i think 80% is what they class as normal so dont think doing to bad.

Ah OK. Thank you JeffAjaxSmith!

It is so confusing to me as the only figure that was out of range, or low, out of ALL of the PFT numbers, was this DLCO/VA figure. So much so that the overall reading of the PFT was 'Normal'.

Still learning...probably scaring myself more with all this reading of medical stuff without being a doctor.

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it!

Hi Maria,

As Jeff say's DLCO is gas transfer across the alveoli, inhaled oxygen into the blood through the alveoli and carbon dioxide out of blood to be exhaled. My DLCO is 23% of predicted so your in pretty good shape compared to me so try not to worry to much :) .

I agree with dall but will ad your hyperventilation given numbers could be bad breathing.

But this loads other things like folate b12 defence can cause breathless

I was confused with all my results, my lung specalist said not to get hung up on all the data, most important one was the FEV1% figure.

That depends on the condition. For COPD, yes, FEV1, is key but for other diseases FEV1 can be normal.

Katinka46, I know you like wierd lung stuff :)

What do you think of a slightly low and isolated DLCO/Va figure, meaning DLCO was in the normal range? Let me know if you have any suggestions! Thanks and wish you a great weekend.

Sorry not to get back to you promptly. Can't really help about that. DLCO is about gas exchange. I think less than 80% is considered a bit low. Best thing would to get proper information from a doctor. And yes, I do like the odd ones, mainly because of my own condition. Which is odd.

Do keep me informed about how things develop.

I hope you are doing OK with your condition.

Hi alvorite neither do I. All I know is that if you wake up on a morning breathing, it's a good day.
