I'm new here & glad to be aboard. I've been reading a lot of good info. I have end stage copd and using morphine for shortness of breath. As a result I am suffering from constipation. Fiber con and senna make me nauseous bloated & so gassy. Hospice now recommending colace and sorbitol. What do others use?

Try Movicol. I find it helps me. It is not a laxative but just eases things. Hope you find something that helps you.

Hi, Yorkie-momma. I've always had a slow gut and take tablets with codeine in which compounds the problem. To combat this, I eat lots of high fibre foods, starting the day with muesli with nuts, dried fruit and oat bran in, wholemeal bread, brown rice, jacket potatoes, lots of fruit & veg with skins on and pips in, digestive biscuits. And plenty to drink - aiming for 2 litres/day. My constipation busters of choice are oranges, rhubarb, and liquorice. And cauliflower cheese.

Hi Yorkie-momma, my painkillers cause constipation so I find orange juice, plums, beans and fluids help. It is a case of trial and error to find what suits you. Raspberries work too but cause discomfort in the back passage. Most vegetables help even salad foods. My mum used to use onion water.

I was on morphine for 10 yrs, I took stool softeners every day 2 docusate,, colace is good, any opiate will constipate you until your body gets used to it then it tapers off but at first its hard like rabbit turds pardon my description and you have to use something strong until you adjust. I had to take Lactolouse for a while very strong, once you get all that backed up stuff out, your body will regulate, stay away from things that will bung you up like rice and cheese for a while, lots of fruit either in a smoothie drink, apple sauce, it will help, and water "yuk". I was taking 100mg of Kadian which is 24 hr morphine, I didnt find it worked as well as the morphine tablets, also Anoro puffer is good for COPD. Ask your dr. I can guarantee Lactolouse will work 3 good swigs tastes so sweet and in your case may take a few days but once it kicks it watch out dont sneeze lol.

Hi, I've been using Diamorphine via my nebuliser for a long time and I have no trouble with constipation as I have prunes (dry packet type) + branflakes at breakfast + handful of raisins each day, and plenty of water.

Hi Yorkie-mamma,

I just returned a week ago from the hospital, and of course was on pain medication and ran into the same problem as you. I actually started to freak out! I researched well, and came across a Dulcolax laxative tablet and it did wonders in 4-5 hours. I think you could take 1-2, depending on how bad yours is, for maintaining. Maybe every other day.

I also as another recommended would eat a fiber cereal, or as much fiber as you can. And lots of water! I also take a gummy fiber chewable :)

Good luck! I know it can be uncomfortable

Hi Yorkie-Mamma, lots of good advice so far for you and that's good. This problem does not affect me (touch wood) so can offer no tips however I have seen on the cartoons on tele, sometimes a stick of dynamite stuck in the appropriate place does the trick.
