All true stories that happened to me,is it london or dies it happan where you are?
Yes, my daughter was desperately ill, bringing up blood in a washing up bowl and passing it out at the other end. She had a high fever and terrible pain.
When her fiance rang A&E she was told there was a two hour wait. Her fiance drove her to hospital where she was rushed straight into ICU. She was in there all night, before they could get her stabilised enough to have tests. That night, she had a major operation, Her bowels were in a dreadful state, There were two complete obstructions, where adhesions had wound round tight and the tissue had died. When they opened her up, 4 pints of feculant fluid spurted out, They had to get the Consultant Surgeon out of bed.
They were amazed she survived. If she had been older, she wouldn't have lived, they told her. She has a big scar, as there were 24 clips.
If an abulance had come she could have been treated on the way. She needed oxygen at the hospital as well as pain relief.
Hi Mortalguy, understand what you are saying. But I am informed ambulances are only available if you are seriously ill. However Azures story tells another tale which could have had tragic consequences as do many other stories we here. The NHS including ambulances is very much a postal code lottery these days, due to finances and cuts. I wondered what has happened to patient cars, most services seem reliant on phone in put nowadays which takes time to give all the details and outcome is often decided by a none medical person. Even dental services for emergency are similar, I realize this sifts out the none urgent but it often overlooks the urgent too. Also in your case they mentioned anxiety which starts an automatic delay in the hope you will calm down, wrong but true sadly. This is the reality of the situation but it does not help you or I when we need medical care or advice and is the cause of many people running to nearest A&E pardon the pun. Hope you have better experience in future, the last time I had an emergency ambulance was for an accident about five years ago, it took 40 minutes to come and I spent six hours in A & E with poor care, I did have a broken shoulder with other injuries but was treated like an over anxious patient, ended up with 9 months physio and on going pain.Hate to think what will happen when I do become seriously ill, when my condition gets worse in the future.
Never, although I did have a frustrating and unpleasant time getting to hospital a few admissions ago, not because of the crew.
I was ill with 39 temp and was trying to put off going to A&E. Temp continued to rise and I just had to 'phone as I was struggling. Ambulance duly came and they did some obs and 02 etc before setting off. 3 doors we travelled and the ambulance became ill too. They put a call in and another ambulance arrived 1 hour later. After transfer I was much worse. The young female looking after me told me they were attending a drunk who had not a thing wrong with him 40 miles away. She said he wouldn't stand up for her and in the end the burley driver intervened. He told this guy he was twice the weight of this young woman and got him up and told him to go forth and multiply off. She was furious, saying they had wasted all that time and there are people like you who are genuinly ill.
Got to A&E. Senior nurse didn't even look up and said to the paramedic in the waiting room. He shrugged in disbelief. There was one young guy who kept banging his head on the wall and of course they have to run each time. He was shouting get me my f****** tablets. There was security in with a drunk who couldn't speak English but his friend could. They were finally given the choice to go home or the Police would be called. They went.
Now I am eventually seen by a very good young doctor. She told the senior nurse 'this lady is very poorly', after which she came quickly, but I just felt too ill to be arsed with her as I don't feel she assessed the situation initially. I am mindful they have a great deal to put up with but she really wasn't great.
Is it any wonder when I had a bad reaction with nebbed Colomycin and was told to call ambulance if this happened, I couldn't face it and took my chances at home. No I won't do that again.
