I just do not know what to do to make myself feel better.Still coughing and small amount of mucus and all the symptoms above. My doctor said I should feel better after a few days.

I was given Clarithromycin and pred 13 th May

First time in years , usually it’s doxycycline.

I am dizzy , can’t walk straight , sore throat and mouth , tinnitus worse , itchy, headaches , upset stomach .

Thought it was just me , wonder if it is a reaction , finished them 2 weeks ago , back to my normal 3 mg pred, still feel washed out.

My mood drops after taking higher dose of steroids , that’s normal for me .

My cough has gone though.

Maybe you still have an infection , can you get a sputum check ?

Sending best wishes .

I'd put a specimen in for testing

I had a bad reaction some years ago when my useless surgery put me on Clarithromycin and Amoxicillin at the same time. Luckily for only 5 days. I assumed it was the Clarithromycin which was making me feel so ill. I hope you start to recover soon.

I became very ill on this drug, terrible sore mouth, felt very weak, couldn’t sleep. My cough eventually cleared up but have told doc I want doxycycline in future.

Hi yes I felt terrible on them after 2 days I called the pharmacy and they said I was having a reaction to it so gp changed to something else and now added to my notes as allergic

I had to stop taking it because of psychological effects. I became extremely agitated, couldn’t sleep and felt very distressed. I thought it might be the high dose steroids but the symptoms disappeared immediately on stopping the clarithromycin without finishing the course.

“Of all the macrolides, clarithromycin has been associated with the most CNS adverse effects. Neurotoxicity associated with clarithromycin can manifest as mania, delirium, acute psychosis, and even hallucinations. “

just to thank you for your post , I thought it was just me not coping with being poorly …..dizziness is passing now , I can walk around without grabbing furniture etc .

When it was at its worst , my OH took me to the opticians to check my eye health ….all fine .

Sore mouth and throat getting better and stomach cramps nearly gone .

I hope you are feeling better too, if not , sputum sample or blood test check .

Thank you all for your comments,it seems we have all had bad effects from Clarithromycin,I will never take them again, I have now been told that I am allergic to them. Also I read some where that over 60yrs old should never take Clarithromycin and Prednisolone steroids together, I am 76yrs old maybe thats had a lot to do with me still feeling poorly. I will get my sputum checked and a blood test. So thank you all once again

my dad had dreadful hallucinations ON clarithromycin. He’s allergic to penicillin and usually has doxycycline as he has COPD. He also takes 10mg prednisolone daily. Take care 🦊x

Hi, ask your doctor to change your antibiotics! It can be hit and Miss until you get one that doesn’t give you problems.

I’ve had a few over the years, doxycycline seems to suit me well and always take after food, never on an empty stomach.

I wish you success 👍

Interesting. I adversely reacted to clarithromycin years ago - many symptoms similar to yours. I now use doxycycline which seems to suit me better.

Very bad reaction to clarithromycin

Hi,

Can anyone help with some advice on a reaction to clarithromycin.

I last took the antibiotics 3 months ago and I was on it for 1 week. I am now pretty much house bound still. I spent a week in hospital at the beginning with fast heart rate but consultant denied it could be the clarithromycin.

I have a fast heart rate., very high anxiety and tearful., I have no appetite, constant belching and wind and nausea. I have lost 2 stone and I was only 9 stone to begin with. I am weak and can't walk too far. Can't concentrate. My tongue is white and reacts to certain food. I tried probiotics and yoghurt but I can't tolerate them.

I took antibiotics for a tooth infection but other than that I was fine. I am now so ill and worried.

I would be so grateful for advice? Has anyone had a similar experience or a reaction like this?
