My husband who is nearly 80 has rheumatoid arthritis. We bought a new mattress that he just cannot sleep on. Can anyone recommend a soft mattress for the poor old boy. Many thanks

I've spent a bomb on beds over the last 8 years. none of them any good. This one looks so comfy, I want one. Lol. Someone put me off buying the proper memory foam ones, he said he literally couldn't get out of it in the morning because he was molded in. He had arthritis too. Do you find it hard to get out of flibberti?
Never thought of getting the VAT off a mattress for my other half. We bought a very expensive mattress a good few years ago and although it is OK it really was a waste of money and is now out of shape and needs tuning nearly every 2 weeks. Will have a look at your link and think about it. With the VAT back it could make a difference and we could get a new mattress sooner.
Thanks
Sian
Hi have you tried a mattress topper....there are lots of different types.
If you type mattress into the search box on the top right hand side of this page you will find previous posts on the subject.
Good luck and I hope you find a solution
Thank-you so much for being so kind in replying, now we have some ideas as what to do
My mum having spent a few days in hospital realised how uncomfortable her own bed was so got her a mattress topper. She paid around £100 for it but was happy as Larry with it. I think it was feather and down.
Be aware though that feather and down bedding including duvets can have an adverse effect on breathing, but you can get microfibre which is much better. x
Hi coughalot we tried a mattress topper but unfortunately it did not work for him but thank-you for replying
My mum has a mattress topper from IKEA at home and we have one from the White Company when she comes to stay with us. She likes both!
Hi Helenamay thank you for replying the trouble is the new mattress we bought has a built in topprr and he cannot move with it, we have also tried on the old mattress a separate topper and that did not work guess I will just have to pop him in the shed
I have osteo arthritis and had the same problem when sleeping on a normal mattress. We first tried a memory foam mattress in our camper van after I decided the pain going to bed was jus too much to bear. It was such a relief we just had to change our mattress in our home as well. I just do not know how I would cope if there was no such thing as a memory foam mattress. I am sure without it I would have been in a wheelchair by now.
Incidentally , I was not aware withe that you could purchase one and be vat free. Is it only specific makes or from assigned retailers ?
Hi Starveycat, I too have had this problem and after buying cheap mattresses, soft, regular, orthopedic etc. I finally gave in and went to Dreams where I tried several memory foam mattresses finally settling on Regular, my hubby turned out to be Hard, which is why I was never comfortable in bed. Anyway I gave in and bought the mattresses and we have had such relief from arthritis pain. It is now 7 years later and they are still wonderful to sleep on. They are the best mattresses we have ever had and the best sleep too. Good luck. Maximonkey
Thank-you for your replies now we have some ideas what he needs
We bought a memory foam mattress from B&Q it is wonderful, not too soft, not too hard. Mattresses vary such a lot price wise. We put our new mattress over the old one to add some height. My husband had terrible pain from arthritis and it really helped him. He finds it easier and less painful to get out of bed in the morning now.
I see Tesco have a sale on at the moment.
Thank-you for replying we went out today and his new mattress will arrive on Monday hurray its taken ages to find one that he liked
