I'm posting this illustration from a book of poems by Ella Wheeler Wilcox in response to a post by Azure Sky. Its a very old, leather bound book that I found in our local market one day during one of my many rummages! Love poetry. iris x The line reads 'sad eyes that wait for feet that never come' from one of her poems.

Looks like a lovely book. Poetry is not my thing, But that quote really got to me. M x
I love old books. I remember a bookshop in Saffron Walden that was full of old books. It was good to walk in the shop and smell the dusty smell of the books. X
What wonderful illustrations. I wonder who the artist was. The title page has a Pre-raphaelite look about it.
Thank you very much for sharing xxx
Lovely old book, yes audio books are useful, don't harbor dust, or clutter shelves, but the book, not only the content, has a life..love Margaret x
Lovely comments from you all. Azure, there is no mention of an artist. Each poem, and there are 63, has a little black and white illustration, and there are two full page colour tipped in pictures. Very sentimental poems, The 'sad eyes' line comes from a poem entitled 'One of us two'
the day will dawn when one of us shall hearken
In vain to hear a voice that has grown dumb,
And morns will fade, noons pale and shadows darken
While
sad eyes watch for feet that never come.
One of us two must sometime face existence
alone with memories that but sharpen pain,
And these sweet days shall shine back in the distance
Like dreams of summer dawns in nights of rain.
One of us two, with tortured heart half broken
shall read long-treasured letters through salt tears,
Shall kiss with anguished lips each treasured token
That speaks of these love-crowned delicious years.
One of us two shall find all light, all beauty
All joy in earth a tale forever done
Shall know henceforth that life means only duty
O God! O God! Have pity on that one.
