iv`e been getting chest infections one after the other for the last few months, 2 weeks ago i sent a sputum sample to the hospital, they changed my usual anti biotic to Doxycycline, now, if i am not sick with it i feel nauseous for an hour or so after taking it , this apparently is one of the side effects, does any one else have this problem?

YES! In fact, I have just been sick. I have taken it before and have felt nauseous each time, but this is the first time I have actually been sick. I am worrying now whether I threw up the pill so what good will it do me. I will continue for the duration though. I keep having infections and usually take something else...this did work last time though so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can handle the nausea and it will work. Good luck - hope you do well with it. I do find after the first couple of hours the nausea goes away. Cheers!! :)

Yes and very first tablet I took actually made me sick. Sent Hubby to ask Pharmacist if I should continue to take it. Asked Pharmacist as Doctors closed and out of hours is useless. He advice was yes but not on an empty stomach. After that I took after a meal and no problems. Suzyxxx

I don't know if you've been told but the advice on using doxy is this.

First thing is to sit up and take it with water. Sit up for at least half an hour. This is because the outer casing can start to dissolve before it reaches the stomach.

Second is no milk products for 2 hours.

Although I have had no problem with taking doxy, we have only just found out this recently.

I hope this may help in some way

Pete has Doxy sometimes as a change from Azith but he never feels nauseous on it. He takes so many drugs though so maybe doesn't notice. I hope the problem passes and you can settle down with it as it does seem to work well. Everyone is different of course and someone else might not get along with it so well.

Take care Whit. xx

I took Doxy last summer. Went on holiday whilst taking it despite using adequate sun protection, my feet were badly burnt! A common side effect and it is listed, but I admit to not having read leaflet fully. Ended up in AandE on return to have blister lanced and dressed. With our forecast for a heatwave thought I'd forewarn!

I always sit myself down, have a warm cup of tea handy and a couple of slices of buttered bread. I don't drink just water...I found out what fishes do in it....but have a slice of bread, gulp of tea, pills, more bread and more tea.....then just sit.

Yes,

I have had to have it put on my notes that can not take a Doxycycline as 20mins after taking I am very very sick, my Husband has had to leave work in the past to clean up as I also have Multiple Sclerosis so mobility limited.

But no more Doxy for me.

I've taken several courses of it in recent times & although not felt sick as such I've had the odd feeling of being light-headed, but never really knew if that was tablets or just the general illness/SOB (I'm learning the lingo on here).

It's been a good tablet for me though & seems to have killed off some of the infections I've carried.

Sorry to hear you have a struggle with it though.

Hi There!

I have copd and bronchiectasis I was diagnosed 18 months ago. Since that date I have had Strepp and staff infections and I have been taking antibiotics for the whole of that 18 months and still ongoing! I take regular 2 week courses of Doxycycline. I had a nasty set back earlier this year when I contracted MRSA in my lungs and I still have it. As you are probably aware you cannot go out into direct sunlight or even on a cloudy day. I am a prisoner in my home the only escape I have are my regular trips to the hospital, we are currently trying to get on top of my complex sleep aponea problem, I have recently been put on a Bipap machine so fingers crossed things will improve. Sorry for going of on a tangent. Side effects, yes I used to feel slightly sick after taking them for a few weeks and often have headaches, but my biggest problem is my tolerance to daylight, I have to have the curtains closed during the day I have even resorted to wearing sunglasses on very sunny days whilst being in the house. I hope you adjust quickly to the Doxy.

Regards

Chris

I am taking doxycycline too. Sputum tests found that I had a particular influenza bug that was resistant to other antibiotics. 3rd dose tonight. So I imagine this is what your sputum tests showed also. I get heartburn after taking them. Take them with a meal - that's why I take mine with my evening meal and I drink a lot of water with them and make sure I drink lots of water during the day. I also make sure to eat natural yogurt when on antibiotics or you can possibly take pro biotic tablets. I am also on steroids and am not sure if they don't also cause indigestion too. When I had problems years ago after having asthma for five weeks and changing antibiotics every week for 3 the last antibiotic I was on made me feel as you do. I went to the Docs about it as was worried but she said that as long as I wasn't being sick after taking them that was fine so long as I could live with the nauseous feeling. Though she did say that if I wanted she would change them. As I had already taken 3 and a 1/2 days worth I thought it best to keep taking them for the next few days and finish the course. If you are throwing up straight after taking your tablet then you are not getting the benefit so contact your surgery and get an emergency appointment. They can either give you a different antibiotic or something for your stomach. Hope things get better for you.

Best of luck

Should add to the last post that I eat my yogurt in the morning and not when I take the doxy. I always drink a glass of water before every meal and water with my meal. I eat half my meal then take a big drink of water and take the tablet. Then eat the rest of my meal. Always read the leaflet that comes with the tablets as they tell you how to take the medication and the instructions to take with a large glass of water and a meal was in that information. I don't remember having problems when I took doxy for malaria prevention on holiday in South Africa last year - we went for a couple of months to visit family. So had to take them for a long time but I wasn't on steroids then so maybe it is the steroids that make the difference for me.

Hope you are feeling better now.

Doxycycline is my permanent rescue antibiotic. When i first had Doxy in hospital it made me very, very sick. That was because they gave it to me without telling me to drink lots of water with it. I would also recommend that on an empty stomach is not a good idea. I always take it AFTER breakfast and drink plenty and now I have no problem at all with it. Sheila x

Hi Whit. Doxycycline is my rescue AB. When I first had this prescribed I was terribly sick. I soon worked out how to beat the problem.

For me the way that works is to take the Doxycycline last thing. When I have been put to bed I swallow the monster (s) and then lay as flat as possible for the next 30 min . By doing this I can then be propped up with out any further nausea.

Sorry to post again on this. Just had lunch and as I keep my tablets on the kitchen table I thought I would read through the leaflet again to see if there was anything mentioned in there that would help you. It says on my leaflet with the Docycycline 100mg tablets and apparently it is the same leaflet that goes in with the 50mg too that actually if you have an upset stomach you can take the tablets with a glass of milk.

Maybe this will help.

Yep, I've just been changed to Doxycycline after becoming seriously ill after taking clarithomycine and within 10 mins of taking Doxycycline I vomit and feel ill right up until about an hour before the next dose when I start feeling better, take the next dose and start vomiting again. And I'm following the instructions sitting up, drinking a full pint of water with it, only drinking water all day as my usual coffee has milk in it, no dairy foods or drink at all. In fact any food makes me feel ill. Rough ride!

I had taken doxycycline twice before but had the most horrendous headaches. My Gp thought they were a good antibiotic but on my 3rd dose the pain in my head was so bad that I had never experienced pain before. I was rushed into A& E and diagnosed with intracranial pressure in the brain. I’m never allowed to take it again.
