Do organs get checked before transplant

Sadly there is a lot on the news about the 2 men who died after kidney transplants at the uhw which is up the road from me.

The donors kidneys were infected with something called Meningeoencephaltis which was caused by a parasitic worm.

As some of you know im hoping for a double lung transplant next year and it really has got me asking the question ""are these organs checked for anything at all in anyway for anything """"" Does anyone know the answer to this because the information im getting isnt helping at all.

Don't worry Mandy, all organs are thoroughly checked. Of coarse there will always be mistakes made but lets hope these are far and few between. Stay positive and focused cus after all is said and done its a big risk staying the way we are, that's why we have been advised to go down the transplant route.

" Mandy!... Tony is right, every organ is tested and checked thoroughly before each transplant, sadly we only ever hear about the negatives to life and Medical problems and never the positives but there are far more success story's than negative ones Mandy.. so please don't let the time your waiting for your lung transplant become a fear. Still look to it as a new beginning for you. Take care of yourself ..Megan."

My only theory to why 2 died was that they had the same donor that had the problem as I believe they only transplant one into the person and we have 2?

Statistics:

Transplants save lives In the UK between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2014:

4,655 organ transplants were carried out, thanks to the generosity of 2,466 donors.

1,328 lives were saved in the UK through a heart, lung, liver or combined heart/lungs, liver/kidney or heart/kidney transplant.

3,301 patients' lives were dramatically improved by a kidney or pancreas transplant, 188 of whom received a combined kidney/pancreas transplant.

Figures for each organ type below - please note that multi-organ transplants are counted once in each organ. E.g Heart/Lung transplants are counted in Heart and in Lung.

Kidney - 3,257

Pancreas - 261

Heart - 206

Lung - 218

Liver - 924

Bowel - 26

A further 3,724 people had their sight restored through a cornea transplant.

A record number of 821 kidney transplants from donors after circulatory death took place and accounted for one in four of all kidney transplants.

1,114 living donor kidney transplants were carried out accounting for more than a third of all kidney transplants. 'Non-directed' living donor transplants (also known as altruistic donor transplants) and paired and pooled donations contributed 190 kidney transplants between them.

Over 1,050,000 more people pledged to help others after their death by registering their wishes on the NHS Organ Donor Register, bringing the total to 20,239,715 (March 2014).

i wish worry is what i felt im terrified of it

Hi Mandy , Helen from Pembrokeshire . I can understand your concern about transplants & have been following this on our Welsh News so we have probably had more in depth details than the rest of the UK . I'm sure you will have seen that the families have said that they hope people will not be put off from having transplants as a result of his awful thing that has happened to them ? If I remember correctly the one man had had two previous transplants which gave him extra years .You must remember that this was an extremely rare occurrence of an extremely rare parasite - hopefully this will mean that whatever checks are carried out will be even more rigorous . Take care , Helen .xx

Hi Mandy I had a friend who was on the transplant list for a kidney he lost his first at the age of 26 and then at the age of 55 his other started to fail he was put on dialysis 3 times a week at the local hospital.

I remember him saying he had been taken off the list because he had a hart attack only mild but they do check every donor and recipient take care and try not to worry

Hi Mandy,in your position I would probably think(cynically)there but for the grace of God go I.They got it so I would,nt.It,s harsh but but our survival instinct takes no prisoners.Well mine does,nt anyway. If anything there will be more checks than ever due to this harrowing event so you will be even safer.Stay positive Hun!D.

thanks everyone all good advice as usual x x x x
