This is funny, I was actually speaking to my PR team yesterday about the same product.

What they said to me was "there is no proof they work for COPD" however, some people find it useful, depending on what type of COPD they have!

I breathe in fine, but my air sacs hold onto my air and I can't expel properly, although I do my purse breathing, which to a degree helps. A suggestion they came up with:

1 4 litre clean milk bottle, make a hole in the side about half way up and place a straw into the hole. Fill the bottle with about 3 inches of water (a little washing up liquid if you want fun) and blow bubbles!!! apparently this will allow you to expel more air and make breathing easier.

As power breathers aren't cheap, this was their suggestion and to give it a couple of months to see how I got along with my milk bottle.

Hope this helps.

LOL I agree, not point in being miserable with COPD, might as well have some fun too, while improving your breathing :-)

eyes_right, This is certainly a better and cheaper solution, because you can take any plastic bottle any kind of catheter, or piece of tubing. Moreover, you can calibrate the amount of water you put in the bottle; for weak lungs only a little water is enough - it;s only if you have extremely strong lungs that you fill it more. It[s better because it's cheaper. As I found it hard. I let it go after a while. Worth a try if you have energy. and as you say if you don't keep too much air in your lungs.

helingmic, you have the same attitude as me, I love it !

My energy left me two years ago .... lol .... or some of it, I would love to get my lungs up to about 50%, I'm not sure that is at all possible, but I'm going to give it a good go with the help of my team. They are wonderful and know I won't give up until they say no more!

I've come a long way in two years, still taking 2 steps forward and 5 back, but if you don't try you'll never know and I don't want to live like this for the rest of my life! I set myself targets, some I know I will achieve, others will probably be beyond me, however, for me, knowing I'm trying is my best source of treatment.

I have ups and down, visit to the gym, and visit to the hospital. sionce Spetmeber, I have taken Vit C and Zinc combined (Bioconcepts) pure cod liver oil with Vit D (Seven Seas and Acidophilus (Healthaid). They explain about acidophilus, that the good brobiotic bacteria eat the bd and protect you mobre from the bad one as they crowd outthe bad one. I started this as in hospital I had C-difficile. This was so nasty, caused partly by the antibiotics which deplete and empty ALL bacteria, especially in teh guts. I received a drug to fight C-difficile and had to carry the treatment for a fortnight. I still had diarrhea. Then I took acidophilus to crowd the baddies out. It worked within 2 days! No runs and everything back to normal.I take all the above regularly as clockwork. When I went to show myself to my chest consultant, he said I was transformed. But he will never comment on the vitamins and supplements because "it's not NHS policy as the research on these products are inconclusive.!" It's the same if you ask your consultant if oranges are good! He will only tell you if you think so take them! so I take all this and feel well! and he "officially" doesn't know why :-)

I had a Powerbreathe: It trains to breathe in with resistance. Then I lost the little spring while washing the elements! I bought a Powerlung which trains to breathe in AND to breathe out with calibrated resistance.I prefer it.

It's quite hard to do. I still have the Powerlung, but I have switched to the gym because

1. I think the gym develops all muscles, including the lungs.

2. I noticed that I caught some infection using it! I don't know if it was due to me blowing germs that developed on the devices. since one has this in one's mouth, there might be abig chance of infecting oneself!

I found them too hard. The result of training after a few months were not tangilbe enough for me.

I would go for the Powerlung rather than the Powerbreathe which only trains the inhaltin with resistance.

If you're a retainer, try blowing up balloons ..... just make sure you get the larger ones that aren't too hard to blow up. It helps strengthen the lung muscles and, in particular, helps you to expel far more oxygen from you lungs than you normally would.

They don't cost much so you simply throw them away after you've blown each one up a few times .... less risk of harbouring infections.

Hi

I do not have COPD but had Bi-Lobectomy (Lung) surgery in 2010. Exercise was walking the dog and for a long time used a exercise bike. Lately not breathing well up slopes and stairs, so bought "Powerbreathe". This is week 1 and am trying level 1 for this week.

Do you have any advice to offer ?
