Attendance allowance

Has anybody with emphysemia on oxygen therapy applied for Attendance Allowance? I'm just wondering if I am wasting my time because I remember what a waste it was applying for ESA a few years ago.

Hi

I applied for and recieve DLA for the same condition, and before I was on oxygen theraphy.

If you meet the criteria there is no reason for not to claim a benefit you are entitled to.

Seek some assistance from CAB to complete the form.

Good luck.

Yes I have the same condition as you and been getting disability and attendance allowance for three and half years and know am just started on oxygen as stone said it just depends how bad it affects you but please claim it

hi, i applied for pip in nov 2013 when i had to quit my job due to ill health, i have had chest problems from birth bronchiel asthmatic born, pleurasy so many times ive lost count, 2 x punctured lungs, lung sealed off ,pneumonia, got diagnosed with copd in 2011 as my condition got worse more so xmas 2013, i had a ct scan which showed i had emphasema then blood tests revealled i have Alpha 1 antitrypsin defiency i have informed DWP of everything that has been happening and how since my original form was filled in my health has deteriated rapidly due the A1AD, I've given them the specialists name and hospitals that are dealing with me now ,and hey ho i recieved a letter at the weekend telling me i don't meet the criteria for PIP. I have been told i can have a reconsideration between 28th aug-4th sept ,i feel so let down, im 41 and can barely do everyday tasks and when i do try im exhausted, i can't do things with my kids as i want to, just one example like go to drayton manor as i can't walk round for that long can't stand for long, if the weather is to hot im worse if its cold stiill no good as thats just as bad and thats just for one day out, poor buggers have to cope with my illness too, but this is now an everyday life style for me, and i don't meet the criteria, i worked since leaving school apart from having my kids and the time spent in hospital due to illness, i already feel low and depressed about things but that just topped if off, sorry for the moan and long post. ok kick up the backside and try and smile i can stiil do that lol, sonia xxx

you need to appeal they nearly always give you it on an appeal you have got to tell them every struggle you have on your worse days not the ones where you do a bit better

put yourself in a worst day and go through everything from waking up to getting in bed and through the night when your sleeping....list everything that you wouldnt be able to do everything someone else would have to help you with on your WORST day

i know someone who got it for having a wheat allergy APPEAL

and don't say you have good days, replace good days with better days, also say you are in constant pain, and not you start to get pain after walking 25 yards etc, be very careful with your wording,

Thanks mike, fingers crossed ehh. Xx Sonia xx

apply for it.....its not so much the illness that is the issue but how it effects your life

you must tell them about your days when you are at your worse not your best....tell them about the struggles you have and day to day problems that use to be easy ....you have to tell them the bad bits we all have plenty of them

you also want to get letters supporting the problems you have if thats possible i had a letter off my consultant just remember its not the illness but the problems it brings

Thanks Mandy i will appeal sometimes i feel i play down my illness as i don't want people to judge and think whats wrong with her, because of my age and its not stamped on my head people assume i can't be that bad if only they knew i wouldn't wish this illness on anyone ( well maybe a few lol ) . sonia xx

I think that is the problem that we have got used to our limitations and try to do our best with what we have. So we adapt, it has not made our lives better!

Morning everyone.

If I'm being thick just ignore me, I get DLA high rate mobility and middle rate care is that Attendance Allowance.

Hi kimmy,

How I understand it is people under age 65 years claim DLA ( currently being replaced by PIP )

People over 65 claim attendance allowance .( but I don't think there is a mobility component , just care )

However if you are already receiving DLA/PIP by the time you reach 65 you can continue to get it.....including mobility .

I have no direct experience of this . Fortunately I am well enough not to need these benefits .

I am 63 and and was also fortunate in being able to get state retirement pension at 60 yrs

10 months .

Hi therms ,

Please see my reply to kimmy . Depends on age whether you apply for DLA/PIP or attendance allowance .

Think I read on here in the past that people on oxygen therapy usually qualify as this has a significant impact on your life . However as others have advised describe your worst days and get CAB or a welfare rights advisor to help fill in the foms .

Cheers .Coastal .

Thanks for the reply yeah that all makes sense, I am on oxygen as well so don't know if that makes a difference. xxx

My husband applied for it earlier this year and now receives it. I spoke to the respiratory nurse and was referred to the Welfare Rights Team who came out and helped us fill in the form. I would say it was worth a try! Good Luck TAD xx

Hi.

I applied earlier this year for a little extra so I could maybe get someone to help with the housework. I was told that I was too old (you have to be under 65) and as long as I'm able to bathe and dress myself, I'm not entitled anyway. Although I've had lung disease all my life, I've always been very independent and tried not to ask anyone for help. I think it's ridiculous to say that because you're over a certain age and then need a little help that it's just something you have to accept. This country needs to look to its own and those of us that have worked for 50+ years and have earned the right to assistance in our later years.

How did you apply?

My application was handled by my local councils benefit team. From start to finalisation of the award.

Have a chat with your council and or your social Services. They'll both be more than willing to help you.

Cheers.
