Until 2020 I also was on the lower rate and needed to apply for higher rate as I had now been diagnosed with Epilepsy together with respiratory problem s. I was told that a new complete form had to be completed in doing that you took the risk of losing the allowance altogether if you failed. I waited two years had the help of a team member at the local day hospice that I attend , who guided me through the large form again. I passed and did not have to wait more than a couple of weeks before hearing the decision. My advise would be to get a little help to guide you through the form. I am sure that one of the members on here would be able to tell you where to get help. If the guude lines have changed in the last three years I stand corrected . Good luck

Hi ,many for your reply, that’s what I thought seems odd that I need to fill in the form again! Think I will get in touch with citizens advise and ask for the help.thanks again.

Hi, clematis5932 is correct, the whole claim is looked at again, not just the change of circumstances, it is a good idea to ask the Citizens Advice to support you with the forms.

I think a new form is better because, it lets you add changes if needed and 'every' question.

My mother got the lower rate but when she became more frail I felt she’d qualify for the higher rate, cause she was in her 90s, lived alone & really needed help at night. I was told she’d have to apply all over again. I did the first application and was happy to do it again, but she just couldn’t be bothered. I suspect this is why they make you reapply - the form is so long & complicated it puts people off. It’s disgusting

It's absolutely disgusting how they treat people.

I get the higher rate Attendance allowance but my husband was awarded the lower rate a few years back. His condition worsened so he returned to Age Concern who applied again stating how his condition had deteriorated and he now receives the higher rate.Good luck xx.Sheila 👍

the higher rate is paid if you need help during the night as well as during the day. If this is the case and you can give the reasons why, what help you need and how often then it is worth filling in a new form.

I don't think it's a different form Ice, but you will need to make a fresh application. I would get advice and help with it if I were you. Age UK or CAB would be able to help. Good luck, hope you get it. xx
