I have a sharp rib pain on the left hand side. This has happened to me many times before but it usually goes away in a minute, but this one has been going on for a lot longer. I currently am not able to see the doctor. Is there anything I can do?

Hi Faith
Sorry to hear you are in a bit of pain at the moment, a few months back I had a sharp pain whenever i breathed in, the Doc said the lining of my lungs were inflamed and rubbing together, a short course of antibiotics done the trick, If you can't see a Doc straight away maybe take some ibuprofen to help with pain and inflammation but I would ring 111 for proper medical advice. Hope you feel better soon . x
Sorry to here that you are in pain but Don't take ibuprofen what ever you do if you have COPD.
Gibbo can you tell me why you shouldn't take ibuprofen if you have COPD please.

I pulled my back a few weeks ago and couldn't get to see the doctor,so asked the chemist what i could have from over the counter like Ibuprofen,he said he cant give me anything like that because of my Emphysema and that i must see the Doctor.
Yes Gibbo I know what you mean if I know I can take something I just ask for it and say I am not taking anything. They will stand back as if I walked in with a bell shouting unclean if I go though my 14 scripts and conditions !! and always say go to A & E or my GP as they are scared of being sued!
Be Well
Go to doctors my husband started with sharpe pain 7days ago and would not go to doctors, and l will always regret l did not ring them as he died, not saying your the same but never take life for granted.

British, I'm so very sorry to hear of this news that your husband didn't make it. Sending you very best wishes xxx Peeg
Faith, your pain could be simple but really you need to speak to a medic, a nurse or a doctor. Doctors should come to your home if you can't get in to one.
Perhaps you could ring the BLF helpline for guidance 03000 030555.
Your heart is on your left side so I wouldn't be waiting. Good luck, please speak to an expert soon. P xxx
Gibbo I have COPD, so can you tell me why I shouldn't take Iburofen if needed, thanks
I wonder if we can draw a parallel here. I have similar short searing pain on my right side mainly when sat down and the moving forward or turning my body to the left. My physio claims that during a bout of severe coughing I have trapped a muscle in my rib cage. AS of the moment the exercises I have been given are not being productive so I have no way of telling if she is right or not. The pain is only just managed by me taking 6 co-dydramol a day.
i have that pain, it comes and goes ,i go weeks without it then i will have it for afew days, it is right on the edge of the bottom ribs my do reckons its muscular, hope youre feeling better
Hi Faith, Have you been coughing a lot lately? I had a pain like you describe so saw the doctor I was told that I had torn a muscle between my lower rib and it would take a few weeks to repair, also told that it probably was caused by coughing hard to clear my lungs. I was told to return to see if it had recovered in about 4 weeks, I would seek some medical advice as I could be something else but sounds very much like muscle tear to me. Go get checked out is my advice Faith and as soon as you can get a diagnosis the better you will feel, take care regards Neil

that's all I can think of at the moment.
perhaps phone 111. But if you say "I have a sharp pain on the left hand side of my chest," They'll conclude to a heart attack! make sure you explain how the pain is.
Hope it helps a bit.
Ibuprofen gel has helped me; then I don't know if that's bad for COPD. This was prescribed by a GP who knew I had bronchiectasis. When I saw him because of the pain on my right side, he established straight away that it was muscular.
But them pain can indicate a lot of things ... that's why it's best to phone somebody from the above.
I hope you get help soon.
