Anyone have information on NAC and whether or not it helps getting rid of mucous. Thanks.
Hi been on them since Nov, caps 600mgs x 3 daily for bronchiolitis, boots the chemist can supply them free if over 60. Anyway in answer to u question.....it's not till u go off a drug do u know what effect if any they are having. Question being how are u feeling on them, can u breathe easier, in which case they might be clearing the mucous. Like a lot of drugs u have to put it in ur hands of ur gp or consultant in my case. Know that's not much help to u really....sorry.
Don't be sorry! I very much appreciate your reply. I will start taking them and see what happens. It's so good to have a site like this one where we get good people like you who help to make life easier. Thanks again.
I take it and it works better than mucinex.

Hi stilltruckin, I have been on carbocstein capsules 2 x 375 3 times daily for years, for the past 2 years my mucus production is absolutely mega and gross, I feel like its all coming from back of my throat /nose , I rarely cough I dont mean a small amount I can be heaving for hours (you may have seen some of my posts begging for help), would I be able to take NAC also, thanks xx Carol
I've only used NAC, but my understanding is that Carbocisteine and NAC are functionally equivalent, therefore taking them together would be the same as increasing the dose of one of them.
However it says here: nhs.uk/medicine-guides/page...
Quote:
'Over time it is possible that Carbocisteine can become unsuitable for some people . . .'
And so you might try taking NAC (600mg * 3 times a day) INSTEAD of carbo for a couple of weeks, in order to see if works any better for you . . .
Hi stilltruckin , Thanks for the information I am certainly going to give it a try, anything is worth a try I say, the mucus is horrendous even when my breathing is good !! I just cant work out where its coming from to me it seems to be the back of my nose not my lungs !!, thanks take care X carol
Hi Carol, further to the mucous problem I suggest the following:
1. I know you have used flutter/acapella device to loosen mucous but maybe there is something wrong with it or you are not using properly. Alternatively you could try bubble PEP (see link below)

Also, look up one of my recent replies to Porche296. I had described to her how to do this. It had been advised to me by my specialist when I had a chest infection and Porche seems to find it helps. So maybe give that a go.
2. Member Simeon just posted his/her method to get rid of mucous by using water "washing". Please have a look and try that as well- might need to try a few times to make it work for you.
3. I also have persistent post-nasal drip from my sinuses. I have seen ENT specialist he says there is nothing much he can do as there are no polyps etc but he gave me a nasal spray: Avamys (fluticasone furoate). I feel it helps a lot because each day when its effects wear off (I apply every 24hours) I feel stuff running in my throat and cough starts. Then after applying there is no cough or mucous. Maybe get this before you go on holidays?
Have a great holiday-take care.xxx
Hi carolg1, only a suggestion, but it sounds like severe post nasal drip to me. I had a terrible couple of years with it repeatedly getting on my chest and making me cough and gag and sometimes I actually vomitted. It got so bad, I felt I was drowning. it's much more under control now with occasional flares.
Hi Casper how did you get it under control? Thanks.
