Hi glitzdevil usually only given steroids when you have a flare up of COPD or infection and it's usually 30mg a day for 7 days and they open up all your airways to make breathing easier and give you an extra big of strength they always work for me. Hope this helps xxxx

It depends what your illness is, and the symptoms depend on how long you take them for. I've taken them daily for almost 12 months now, starting on 80mg a day and over time, reducing now to 15mg a day - my disease is Extrinsic Allergic Alveolitis, and I take them to reduce inflammation in my lungs - this is permanent and irriversable but can be managed. If I were you Glitzdevil, I would be going back and asking why and what you are taking them for. I'm sure they're helping - besides the hunger, weight gain and sometimes 'manic' feelings! :-)

Hi l am also on them but twice a day. Check out the paperwork in the packet, that usually helps. Better still consult the person who prescribe them as they should of told u. I suffer from bronchiolitis, and also take another drug along side this one.

Hi Glitz. There are several ways that doctors use steroids. If you have a chest infection they will usually give you seven days at 30mg as Josie says and sometimes combine this with an antibiotic as well. If the infection is really deep seated they may give you 30mg a day for three days then 25mg for three days then 20mg for three days and so on until you reach 5mg a day for three days. I hope this helps.

That seems to be the standard dose during an exasperation. Apparently they give you a boost. I have difficulty sleeping whilst on such a dose.

I haven't felt a boost I slept nearly 42 hours over last couple of days. Thank you grandadbrian xx

As Cofdrop says, they are anti inflammatories. Px for all sorts of inflammatory ailments as well as our airways.

To be taken in the mornings preferably. I cannot take them myself.

edit: when I get px something I've not heard from I ALWAYS ask doc about it. Sometimes the px without checking your history ie nurofen 500mg when you have asthma and a weak stomach!

Hiya Glitz,Steroids are usually given for a flare up of copd,or some other ailment you have.Usually the dose is 5mg 6 or 8 daily,Then wean off them if your on a high dose..They do have some side effects like insomnia and increase in appetite, but can be a godsend at times..Take care Laura

Yes, they certainly increase your appetite ! I put on HALF A STONE when getting through my course - still , they did help, so the trick is battle with your appetite whilst taking them OR , as I did, cut down on food intake AFTER the course and get your weight BACK DOWN AGAIN !!! - good luck !

You should ask the person that prescribed them why they did so and what they expect the steroids to achieve that way you will be able to tell if the side effects are worth the trouble.I am on 20 mg per day on a permanent basis as they help me breathe.D.

Thank you all for your help. Now understand a bit more, especially the insomnia but not for the loss of weight, guess that's down to stress as my partner is in late stages of kidney cancer, I'm his main carer. Krissy xx

Think you should go back to the GP practice Glitz, ask what steroids are for and tell them about your loss of weight.

Steroids are very powerful drugs ,and it is irresponsible of your doctor to not tell or ask you if you want to take them, explain how they work and the side effects .

They haven't told me anything :-(

grandadbrian, what time of day do you take your steroids? I was advised to take them first thing in the morning to help avoid sleeplessnes.

grandadbrian profile image
grandadbrian in reply to

Yes I take mine first thing in morning, I only have sleep problems whilst on the 30mg dose, not with my maintenance daily dose of 4mg. I suppose in my case it must be too much of a boost.

You should have the prednisolone and antibiotics as a rescue pack for when you get an infection.
