My husband suffers with severe COPD and always has to take the steroids with antibiotics when he has a chest infection and sometimes this had meant course after course (three or four) before it has finally cleared up. Like you the steroids make all the difference and they are fantastic. There are side effects and only once after four courses did he suffer with any noticeable side effects - he got very nasty! The most obvious one is the increase in appetite but once you have stopped taking the tablets, your appetite should return to normal. Also he bruises very easily now and that apparently is a side effect. Its the devil and the deep blue sea!

If you need more specific medical advise, please ring the BLF helpline (click on the red balloon) and I am sure the nurses will be able to help. Take care, lots of love TAD xx

I have been taking 2 x5mg daily for six years now and was once told by my Oncologist that they were keeping me alive. Well I am still here and the worst effects for me has been an increase in weight and that dreadful bruising TADAW mentioned.

If nastiness creeps in try and be aware of it before speaking, I did, and only had to apologise once to my wife and now I am in complete control, mind after 54 years I've had plenty of practice.

To be brutally honest 10mg a day doesn't sound like much but I know over an extensive period of time they can have side effects. if you come off them slowly then you should be ok - you may need to go 2 then 1 then 2 then 1 and then even get 1mg tablets if necessary. Your body produces 5mg a day of the stuff anyway so it shouldn't be too bad. When I took my last one I had a few aches and pains for a couple of weeks. Fine now 17 months later. As far as long term use, I was on 40mg a day for 6 months then down to 20 for another 6 months then spent 8 months coming off them very slowly. I lost all the 'side effects' at about 15mg. Take them in the morning so they don't keep you awake.

Good luck. They are wonderful and horrible at the same time!

They suppress the immune system.you can get a quick hit,but like any powerful drug have to come down, the reality is they break down immune system. Maybe study for yourself ,or I will get told off for telling the truth

You,re on quite a low dose so it should,nt cause you much difficulty. If in the last phase you have problems ask to come off them 1mg at a time.I,m on 20mg permanently and don,t suffer too bad with side effects.I DO GET GRUMPY SOMETIMES THOUGH! Lol.Good luck.D.

Oh they do help. I take one 5 mg daily. Yes there are some problems with them. I get cramps in my legs, gain weight, but feel so much better with them than without. I'm at the end of this diease and this is one thing that makes my day a little easier. You do have to come off them slowly.

As TADAW explained, bruising can occur. I bruise during a steroid course. If I got more hugnry, it would be a blessing for me, as I lose weight quickly when ill.
