Hi Pod, it's good that you're going to have a CT scan. Medics - and you - will be able to see any damage already done and if there's anything going on as well as copd.
I take it that all these antibiotics have been different ones?
Also, did your doctors send off a sample of your sputum to be tested as to which antiB will act on your own bugs.
I would strongly advise you to give the BLF a ring, 03000 030 515 (I think).
When you ring be armed with a list of all the antibiotics you've taken and for how long.
You remind me of myself some months ago. This time last year I was ill for months, one antiB after another for 5 months.
It finally cleared when i was given Azithromycin (i'm not suggesting you should take this one, we are all different) but it worked for me. Was taken over the course of a month.
I had an infection a few weeks later and gp put me straight on it again. Guess what, i've now been infection free for SIX whole months! Mind you, I firmly believe that it's because I came on here in March and learnt so much to help myself, plus I won't be fobbed of at the docs any more with any old antiB. Plus doing pulmonary rehab (PR).
Its been fantastic because in the last months my strength has returned to near normal for the first time in 4 years. I think I'm strong enough to fight off infections with the help of the extra vitamins I take to boost my immune system.
I'd say I'd been quite ignorant really and thought my life as it was was over. Now the only way is up (ever the optimist me).
Sounds like you are going through a rough time, sure some of the site members will have a few ideas on cough relief. Plenty of warm fluids help and sometimes if you can relieve the cough it relieves the other symptoms. If you are bringing up blood you should be seen fast by the hospital, but it maybe is just infection and lots of coughing is the cause of the blood. Steroids are sometimes better when your chest isn't clearing up quickly, afraid that's up to your doctors choice though. Every best wish that you find a relief soon
Hi Podmore, You sound as if you are having a dreadful time. I care for my husband who has severe COPD - when he gets an infection it can go on for months. And usually needs antibiotic after antibiotic. Firstly though I wonder if your doctor has taken a sputum sample to find the best antibiotic for you - and my husband has found that he always needs a course of steroid tablets at the same time. I would suggest that you ring the BLF helpline (click on the red balloon in the corner for the number) - they will be able to give you some very useful advise.
As far as coughing goes - buttercup syrup sometimes helps my husband. And someone posted a little while ago about rubbing vicks into the souls of your feet - it worked for him a couple of weeks ago. Honey in a little hot water is great - some people say manuka honey and my husband has found that has worked very well for him. At least you can take as much as you need!
I hope that you start to feel better soon - this damp weather has really affected my husband. The change of seasons and temperatures is always a problem to him. Please ring the helpline as a start. Take good care, TAD xx
thank you .i always take vic to help me to sleep ,the problem for me now is this damp weather
i hope your husband feel better soon
Hi Podmore,
I have got the same and I am on oxygen 24x7. Please get your GP to refer you to your local immunologist to check your immune system. My GP sent me to mine ant he discovered that my blood was not making any antibodies and as such I have an Immunoglobulin Transfusion Therapy every 3 weeks Basically is is an infusion of antibodies. The down side is it will take up to a year before you see a difference and also it is for life. I am convinced that this is going to help and keep my out of hospital. It is something that you may consider. Best of luck and good wishes. Berwick
I had a period of nearly three months with a persistant chest infection at the end of last year running until around March. I too was started on Amoxycillin to no avail. Eventualy I was put on Doxycillin and Prednisolone which cleared most of the infection but the last bit seemed too go on for ever. But at last the morning hour of violent coughing subsided and the Doc said it had gone but left scarring on the left lung. It does take time but I think you have believe that the antibiotics etc will work and when it has cleared go straight to the medics for help if you feel an infection is present.
