Hi Victoriablue, your lungs become permanently more inflated due to trapped air when you have copd, which can also cause you to become barrel chested because the ribs can move outwards to accommodate the larger lungs.

I imagine this is what the doctor meant. This link may help you understand.

I hope this helps! Sadie xx

hi Victoriablue i also have been told that i have extremely long lungs and have to tell the radiographer to turn the xray the other way round coz they are so long, ithink this can well be to do with copd due to the lungs losing their elasticity much like everything it all heads south lol, having said that a radiographer told me that some lungs can be fairly long regardless? Im quite sure mine is completely down to me being a puffing billy for 47 years!!Also what sadie says is correct too, many variables i think.Janexx

Hi, I have long lungs and have to tell the radiographer when I have an Xray, but I also have hyperinflated lungs ...don't know why ...I was diagnosed as being asthmatic but recently told I may have COPD caused by smoking 40 years ago.

This BLF have lots of information...leaflets and the Helpline...and I have learned so much from the people on this site.

Best wishes

Hi Victoriablue, The last three xrays I have had i told them I had long lungs otherwise I end up having at least 2 xrays and the amount of xrays I have had in the last 6 months I must be glowing in the dark they said it was because I am putting my lungs under a lot of extra work. (ps}This is my first time speaking to any one so I hoped this helped, best wishes

Hello. I have been recently diagnosed with Hyper Inflation of the lungs. I am small. 4'9". My husband and I recently saw a Pulmonary Doctor and found my lungs look trapped and my diaphragm is flattened. They sent some blood work off to test for any Alpha-1 and Emphysema. Emphysema runs deep in my family. I have a CT scheduled for August 8th. They proscribed a medicated inhaler and some other meds. I am 33 with 4 children and I have to walk with a cane and or walker. A few months ago I was fine, playing with my kids, running, hiking and much more. I have had 2 episodes of passing out. laying down or sitting up I have trouble getting that refreshing breath in. Im just scared and am reaching out to get more informed, since the ones who have had these symptoms are no longer here.
