Bland diet
I have a hiatus hernia, and do suffer reflux if I choose the wrong foods, and also just before I go to bed and lay down. However I dont think my condition is as bad as yours. I expect you are on lanzoprazol, or omeprazole etc. I think it would be a good idea to google one of the NHS websites. You should find help there. You could ring BLF nurse who could recommend whre you could find advice. tel. 0300030555 Possibly there is a gastric type forum on Health unlocked. All the best - Annieseed
I have been put on nexium 40mg 1a day and domperidone 3 times a day consultant say he wants me on the for the foreseeable future and also a bland diet which is very hard when you love all things spicy was on lanzoprazol but didn't help just feel hungry all the time and the foods I can eat are tasteless .Thanks for your help
Thinking about bland diets, decor, I wonder if there is an appropriate recipe book that you could find. It could give you a few ideas to make your diet interesting. can you add herbs to buck your food up. Also, fruit, jellies etc. Smoothies might be an idea.
I have been watching what I eat for the last month as i am trying to get type 2 diabetes under control.I craved cake, chocolate etc at first so I made a jelly and bought tubs of peach slices in juice. It seem to do the trick as I don't think about sweet stuff now. Also has the advantage of having lost weight.
Love Gail
My trouble is I can't afford to lose weight but will try your ideas thanks for your advice
If you are cutting back on chocolate and have any left please remember our site chocolate charity. Her name is Scrobbity. lol

That's a bit grim Décor, can your doc refer you to a dietician for advice about how to make foods more interesting without upsetting your health ailments.
Hope you can find some good satisfying meals and puddings that are ok for you.
I will keep on searching
You poor thing Decor, sometimes it seems we're not allowed to do anything we might actually enjoy! Have had a look on t'internet, just search bland diet recipes, and there are some ideas out there so hopefully you will be able to find something that appeals to you. I'm like you, I easily go underweight. Build Up shakes are really nice, I had them in hospital, just like real shakes, the chocolate one is really yummy and am sure they would be ok for you. Ask you doctor to prescribe them seeing as he says you need a bland diet. Have tried others, but the Build Up brand is far the best. At least it will be like having a treat, you can put ice cream in them. Best wishes. Libby
Thanks for advice I am not allowed chocolate
And do go on the Internet for recipes just don't seem much out there thanks for advice
That's such a shame. If it's any help, I've had a dodgy stomach for many years.
To keep it happy and comfortable I've avoided all acid food - vinegars, citrus (apart from lemon), fresh tomatoes - and fat.
I absolutely love tastey food so use a lot of garlic, fresh n dried herbs and lemon juice - contrary to popular belief lemon juice has an alkaline effect on the guts, I find it wonderfully soothing.
I was prescribed Ranitidine for a long time, you can now buy it over the counter, brand name is Zantac but you can buy the same very cheaply in most supermarkets. It's usually called 'Indigestion Tablets' and are tiny. They suppress the acid and prevent it from bubbling up from the oesophagus. I rarely need them now I've re-trained my cooking and eating habits.
Sugar free jelly is great when you need a treat - but which flavour, decisions decisions!
Good luck, xx P.

I feel for you as I love choc and spicy food have you tried 'carob' choc? a healthy alternative..
Bummer, Decor, no chocolate
I have the same, hiatus hernia, refux, and on lansoprosol. But also have barretts oesophagus which is where your stomach lining grows up your oesophagus. I suppose its trying to protect the delicate skin in your throat from burning but its also pre-cancerous. So i do all these things too to try to prevent it getting worse. But oddly i have what they call "silent reflux", i.e. very seldom get heartburn type symptoms.
I looked up alkalising foods and there are some spices which work well - ginger is brilliant; i made ginger tea but slicing up root ginger which is really nice. Fennel tea is good too. And cumin is another good spice which is fine for a lot of people with reflux. Chocolate has something in it called theobromin (sp?) which relaxes the stomach sphincter allowing more acid to reflux.
I think what affects you is quite personal - i experimented a lot. Tomatoes are evil.
Hope you find some solutions to suit you Decor. jean
Oh poor you can't offer any advise cos I don't have a foody problem, except I like it too much but I can feel for and sympathise with you. There will be lots of help and advice coming your way on this site. I always say life can be hard but it beats the alternative. xx
Hi Decor, welcome to the GERD club,
I can only pass on to you what works for me.
1 bed blocks under the feet at the head of the bed.
2 Calculate the foods which trigger the Reflux and then the out of your diet.
3 Eat early, a few hous before before bedtime
4 Gaviscon Advance Liquid after meals and before bed-really helps.
I don't take any GERD meds at all
Good luck!
