Hello and welcome to the site! Diagnosis is a great shock - my husband was diagnosed about ten years ago. Over the years I have found that you need to be proactive dealing with Copd. Stopping smoking and exercise are key to slowing down the progression.
My husband is rubbish with his diet - but you need to make sure you have a diet full of fresh fruit vegetables etc. drinking lots of water helps to keep the system clear. In addition I give my husband 1000mg vit c in autumn and winter and cod liver oil each day.
The fear of colds is dreadful so to reduce anxiety we use masses of Antibacterial hand gel. Make sure you get a flu jab annually and the pneumonia jab. Wishing you many healthy years breathing easily and running after your children. Lots of love e TAD xx
Hi there 31m3ar welcome nice to meet you.It is a shock when first diagnosed, hopefully having joined our community you will learn lots about your condition and will feel a little easier about things.A well balanced diet is the name of the game lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Also as much exercise as you can ,really makes a difference if you can keep yourself fit.Any questions just throw them out there someone is sure to know the answer and be able to help you.Hopefully see you soon Janexx
Diet is one thing and I am afraid I cant help you on that one, but there a lot of things you can be doing for prevention of any infections. I think breathing and mobility are a big factor. There are pulmonary rehab classes for one thing. It would be a good idea to talk to the BLF nurses for further advice. There is a tel. number somewhere on this new site. Also check in with your respiratory nurse for anything else. xx
I am so sorry to read of the problems that you are suffering and I genuinely hope that you can find a diet that suits your needs. I have lots of allergies when it comes to food, and mine all developed after I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I had to amend some of my medications as a result because I became allergic to Verapamil (artificial beta blocker). I even had one of my inhalers changed!
i am always sorry to here anyone diagnosed with copd, but looking on the better side, you have a good chance of halting any progression of the disease being in your forties, most of the above posts give great advice, i am an o.a.p and have changed my life completely, after listening to the folks on this forum, sometimes "old habits die hard" but after a few real frights, i have managed this, , so stick with it my friend , exercise, healthy eating etc. and def no smoking [not saying that you smoke, but i did ] ,,my fetish now lol, is a spoonful of manuka honey each day, the 24+ stuff , but it is expensive. but i allow myself that indulgance each day,, ,, keep well my friend and may you live a long happy life,,,,,,and remember "worry gets you no where at all" best regards,,jimmy
thank you so much for kind words of encouragement. I'm afraid I did smoke - off them about 6 weeks now and yes it is soooo hard. i forgot about manuka honey though thank you for;reminding me i used it when I couldn't breathe so must take it again. I also used a salt pipe so maybe that will help with my nicotine cravings. thanks Jimmy - take care x
at least your honest 31m,,it really is hard with the smoking, but it can be possible with the right thinking, i must admit i found it really hard,stopping/starting many times,,,, then one day after a hospital stay [for the umpteenth time],, it just suddenly came to me,, just stop, and i did, none of my friends can believe this now, i couldnt believe how easy it was, ,,just keep trying 31, and that day will come, and you can bet you will feel a lot better, and live a lot longer,, you get fed up with people getting on to you about smoking,, i did lol,,but it really is imperative , believe me,,, good luck with the salt pipe, and good luck in cracking the cigs,, all the very best,,jimmy
thank you so much for your words of encouragement Jimmy - I have lapsed but am off again now - probably because i have first lung function test. I must say the salt pipe really does help me. And you are so right it is just a dreadful habit and when I have lapsed it is always in secret because i would be too ashamed if anyone knew - so hopefully no more. Stay well Jimmy and thank you again for you kind words - Eimear
i think most of us have been there Elimear, those of us that are honest lol
its a horrible habit that gets such a grip on us , its almost unbelievable, just like a drug, but if i can do it, you will be able to, as i was a very heavy smoker most of my life, at which folks just gave up on me,,, but it can be done, in fact it must be done really, if the salt pipe helps good enough, im only an old phogey now, but if i remember right, the words that stuck with me was "never give up, trying to give up", you will do it my friend. no one is perfect, we all make mistakes , god knows ive made plenty,, but i can gaurantee, your health will improve no end, you will be happier [believe it or not] and you will most certainly live longer,
im on end stage copd,, ive lived that long, when im not supposed to lol,,,, that their thinking of shooting me:), but i know a lot of it is to do with stopping smoking , all the very best Elimear, you can do it, kindest regards ,,jimmy
thanks so much Jimmy - hope you get good nights rest and good luck with urology appointment tomorrow. By the way congratulations on a very beautiful garden .
