The grown up advice is keep smoking we dont give a damn what the outcome will be.

Forget concerns that doctors have passed onto members that put quitting smoking should be the first and most important life change.

Not really helpfull.

I Agree With Blog Posting ... What Can A Say ... Smoking Replaces Co2 You Lose When You Over Breath ..... And Vitamin B12 Takes Nasty Chemicals Out Of The Nasty Fags You Smoke

No Is That A Good Analogy ..... And If So For Ever Hold The Peace .... A Think :))

Hi Yes There Been Lot Of Research Into B12 And Lung Condition's ... Like The BLF Says About Having Mixed Diet

Which Is All Very Good " In A Perfect World " But Did Surprise Me .... As They No Its Not Always Possible Cost And Appetite Plays A Part In Diet And Lung Conditions

But Yes I Read Art About Injections Something To Do With Your Husband Not Being Able To Get B12 From Is Food Or From Pills So That's Why They Inject Him

But From What I Have Read About Trials 18 Where Watched And 10 Given B12 Those Other 8 A Placebo :(

In The Year Long Trial Some Where Smokers But All Had Nasty Heart Lung Problems Infections

In The Ten That Where Given B12 There Was No Change In There Condition Lung Function :O

In The 8 There Had Been A Marked Deterioration In Form Of Fibrosis And Lung Function :(

A Think Given Trials And I Have Read A Think It Will Be Doing Your Husband More Good Than Harm

Apparently It Can Help In Fight Against Cancer - Fibrosis - Heart Disease - Helps Protect The Lung Stops Acid Destroying Them And Gets Rid Of Nasty s Out Of The Blood :O

In My Own Opinion It Would Be Nice If I Could Eat All Recommended Foods To Get My B12 But As Is Cost And Health Issues Are A Factor

Am Not Endorsing B12 Or Anything Here Am Just Sharing My Opinion And What I Have Read .. And Why I Feel I Have Nothing To Lose Given My Condition In Giving It A Try

Hi Brook

I hope no one here actually attacks smokers for smoking .... it is after all a free world (ish).

Many of the people on this site are here because smoking has made them ill ... and not smoking will prolong their lives .. so obviously they will have strong opinions about smoking and will recommend not smoking ... I hope that does not seem like giving smokers a hard time.... facts are facts but addiction is also addiction and giving up is very hard to do

Some people have their illness blamed on smoking, like you I have a work environment cause as well, working in dusty and smoky environments. Admittedly the work places have become smoke free of late but that does not help those who were exposed in the past does it Daz?I do not smoke now but understand how those who do struggle to try and quit feel.

Well I have helped two of my young friends give up by giving them a photo of me!!

Go on laugh but it has worked they have a copy of a photo which was of me on my nebuliser after a particularly bad bout and one that my sister took of me when I was in hospital and if that is not enough to stop someone smoking I don't know what is!!

Not all the people on here give smokers a hard time. I don't give smokers a hard time. I suggest they would be better off giving it up. The rest is up to them, It's their life.

Maybe because we are concerned? Consider this - my husband was urged to stop smoking due to heart disease at the age of 38, when our kids were 3 & 5 and I was 26.He didn't. The kids never had a Dad who could run around and play football or other games, or do anything other than sleep when he got in from work. At 51 he collapsed at work and needed a by-pass op. He couldn't work after that, so I had to go full-time with both my parents needing looking after - Mum had a stroke and my Dad had smoking-related COPD. The kids were then teenagers. He still smoked. 10 years later he needed another by-pass op, he stopped then due to having a collapsed lung and bad chest infection after the op. He then had a ruptured aortic aneurysm , from which he very nearly died, caused by damage to the artery from smoking. He now has diabetes, congestive heart failure, and Pulmonary Fibrosis. The fibrosis is familial - his Dad had it - and it is probably smoking which did the damage which brought it on. I tried everything to get him to stop, from nagging to being supportive - nothing worked because he didn't want to stop. If you asked our kids if they would rather have had a Dad who hadn't smoked the answer is obvious. And me? I just pick up the pieces and lay there listening to him struggling for breath at night. He may last until Christmas - we will have been married 48 years in July, for 40 of those years I have been a carer. That's why people want you to stop ! I had no choice but to grow up .........

Well said Gidge. I'm bowled over by your story.

I've seen nothing but support, understanding, patience and kindness from bloggers here regarding smoking.

All the best to you. P

erm, the last time looked, I was all grown-up.

I've only found people here concerned with those struggling to give up, not overly critical.

As a smoker myself, struggling to give it up, I'm not in a position to be critical of any smoker.

Advice can only be given, it's up to the individual whether they take that advice.

I don't understand you comment Brooke 12. You posted exactly the same message in response to someone else last month (I checked out you previous posts, Which we can all do)

Nobody criticises smokers on here. Most of us were, were or still are, smokers and know its hard to stop. The only certainty is if people don't stop, they will get a lot worse, quickly.

That is not being juvenile (in the sense of the opposite to growing up), its the plain truth.

Understanding the struggle faced when smoking must stop and the consequences that follow if unable to stop smoking, concerned members pass information and experience as the rules say we must, even for the dishonest still smoking saying have stopped honestly and with support.

one point I will say I am an ex heavy smoker, until I developed this debilitating disease I had not realised how smoking affects others. now out side of supermarkets smokers just out side of the door and around most entrances there are a group of smokers, but now the slightest smell of smoke and my lungs run for cover and I can not breath,

and the smell is awful more than that horrible,

when a smoker comes into a room you can smell them,

I have no problem with anyone smoking but just do it out of my way, so I do not have to smell it or breath it,

Thanks for your comment Richard. My sentiments exactly.

I'm fed up with having to cross the road to avoid the poisonous smoke that makes me gag and choke.

It's unfair not to be able to enjoy fresh air and sit outside a cafe or pub with my children.

Grrrr some of us have to exercise our freedom of choice and sit inside or cross the road or cover our faces.............

in reply torichardcrossroads

My husband is in a similar position to you and sometimes it becomes quit difficult to dodge the smokers. If people want to smoke, knowing the damage that it causes to their bodies, let them do it away from others. When you know it is causing health problems and you do nothing, which we both know it is not easy to give up, then so be it but if we could turn back the clock cigarettes would have never come into our lives and caused so many health problems and limitations in our lives. Do you want a healthy life to enjoy your family or not.

Hi Brooke12.

I grew up simply because I stopped smoking. At 22 I was diagnosed with TB and spent 3 months in hospital. I had smoked at least 40 a day (I started at 16) and we lived in Germany where duty frees were very cheap. By the time I was admitted to hospital I was down to 3 a day, - not because I wanted to but because I physically couldn't - and weighed less than 6 stone. I stopped completely all those years ago because my life depended on it!! I could have carried on but then I would not have grown up at all - I would have been dead years ago. I now have COPD but at least I'm living (in more than one sense of the word).

I don't get involved in any of the blogs on smoking - that's your/their choice, but my view is if you don't want to stop, then don't complain about your breathing problems. It's too late to reverse the damage but you can slow the progression.

The only way some people will learn, is to give them a hard time! I really don't care if you smoke, I just don't want to share it. If you want to give up enough, you can. If you can't do it, maybe you don't really want to enough? Sorry, but it really is YOU who needs to grow up and take responsibility for yourself. This post is NOT giving you a hard time, just tell you how I feel. Smoking is just extremely selfish. Sorry, but my lung disease is not a choice for me, smoking is a choice.

peege profile image

Well said Sylvsmum

Hi Brooke12

You will come across a wide variety of opinion on this community about smoking. A large proportion of members have a lung condition due to smoking - so they have a right to their opinion. Yes some people may be more "forceful" with their opinion and as long as that opinion is based in their experience of how smoking has affected them then in my opinion that is OK.

Only people who have smoked or who currently smoke know how difficult it is to give up smoking. So learn from their experiences - if they come across as harsh then it is not because they are uncaring - perhaps it is just an eagerness to make sure you and others get to the point where you can give up.

Please don't think everyone on this community hates people who smoke - that just isn't the case. Yes you may come across some people who are less than sympathetic - but that's life I'm afraid. If someone gives you an opinion is it based on their experience of being a smoker -'if not then just ignore it.

Find your way to the people who know what they are talking about.

I gave up 6 weeks ago. I posted on here asking if you thought it was possible to give up when you did not want to. Got a lot of helpful replies one sugested the stop smoking book, which I read and somthing strange happened as I read I found that my need to smoke was getting less and less. So thank you I feel so much better and I am so much richer. I dont know how to find my blog so that I could thank every one. By the way there was only one that seemed hard. So try if I can do it after smoking 30 a day for 40 years and not wanting to stop anyone can. GOOD LUCK

My condition is not smoking related though as others have said groups of smokers outside of shops, offices and hospitals are a hazard that normal lungs have no difficulty with.

I have no opinion on smokers other than I must avoid them where possible because of the damage in my lungs, its a free choice for those who choose to smoke when they are of an age to understand their actions and the affects of secondary smoking.

I know that smoking is a touchy subject but I have never, ever smoked but my husband has smoked since he was 14 years of age and in those days we did not know any better. When the babies came along, it really upset me to see the rooms so full of smoke you could not see through it when trying to feed newborn babies and I asked him to stop but he refused, and as time went on and the children grew up the house smelled, the curtains and paints were yellow, our clothes smelled but he still would not stop.

Now he has COPD/Bronchiectasis end stage, is on oxygen 17/24, nebulisers etc. and has now stopped smoking (which is too late for him). The specialist is 100% certain that smoking has caused his illness. I am now at his beck and call 24/7 as he won't do anything for himself as he says he can't, he expects me to stay with him 24/7 as when I want to go out he gets panic attacks so not only as smoking ruined his life it has also ruined mine.

So forgive me for not having patience with smokers, as all I can see is them swallowing the smoke, it going into their lungs and then being blown back out again, disgusting. I hate my husband for his selfishness and for ruining our lives, not just mine but our grown up children and our grandchildren, because we cannot go anywhere with them, we cannot go on holidays as he now refuses to leave the house therefore I am stuck with a man who didn't give a damn for his wife and children for the past 50 years and is now taking us down with him. My sons and daughters-in-law have never smoked but my sons are starting to show signs of breathlessness and are coughing gunk up and their GP says it is down to the inhaling of smoke when they were babies and they are really mad at their father for not thinking about them all those years ago.

Apologies to you people who are still smoking, but smoking has ruined all our lives and I cannot forgive him for that.

Smokers do get lots of support on here but if you do smoke then that is your choice. Pete smoked for years and gave up 21 years ago but still has breathing problems. Our son aged 30 has given up for a couple of months and I hope he never smokes again. It is so sad to see people destroying their lives but I do sympathise as it does seem to be so addictive and hard to stop. Do keep trying though Brooke12 and carry on posting on this site because the support is here. Good luck to you. x

my brother died from emphysema, he said he had brought on himself, I said it wasn't his fault some people are addicted and others not, but I never criticized him, nor my sister who is also a smoker, so I would hate people to think I feel bad about them because I am not.

I also have VIT B12 injections 3monthly, I have pernicious anaemia for 20yrs and was very ill, coupled by diabetes at the same time, but things are ticking over ok now

Rather than look down on smokers and give them a hard time, just think of all the tax they're saving you from paying and be grateful you're not one of them.

I deleted my previous blog. I am a smoker too Brooke but I don't agree that most on this site lecture me. Quite the opposite - I have found much support here unlike the outside world.

The trouble is smoking is such a contentious issue nowadays. Everything can be blamed on it - If I broke my toe it would be because of smoking! There are plenty of other forms of pollution such as traffic fumes. Why aren't they such a big issue? How many people who hate smoking add their own pollution in the form of cars?

I'm an X smoker, at times up to 30 a day, when ever I was asked to stop I would always reply no because I don't want to, I was enjoying the experience. If I only knew then what I know now, I would never have started. My stopping was easy for me I contracted pneumonia that bad that I saw the other side, why I was pulled back I don't know, but I have never wanted another cigarette and all my family smoke so the temptation is still there, much to my regret as none of them understand that even though I have stopped they are still harming my health that is very precious to me and yes I now have COPD.

Hi , as a non smoker , never smoked , but who now has COPD from passive smoking as a child , parents who smoked between them 80 cigarettes a day and also in the car with windows shut ,.... I want to shout at our youngsters who think smoking is cool.....PLEASE PLEASE LISTEN TO THE MEDICAL ADVICE ....DONT SMOKE....sometimes when I am out and have a coughing fit and see people smoking near by....I want to shout at them LOOK WHAT SMOKE HAS DONE TO ME....would make me feel better in the short time ...but I would most likely get verbal abuse and they would probably be right to do so ....as it is non of my business ...people have choices.

Nowadays very informed choices.

. My mother in her 80's has no idea that my problems are linked to my very happy childhood, I could't be so cruel as to tell her

.I didnt go through the war, when smoking was a crutch , when a cigarette was a dying mans last wish.

My only consolation in all that is happenig to me is that it has stopped 2 of my sons smoking. I didnt ask them to stop when I was diagnosed,I had hasselled them enough in the past....they did it , not for me , but for themslves. Both are now non smokers...they have kicked the habit.

I still get angry at times that this bloody awful disease has decided in its wisdom to take hold of me, but in the big scheme of things , as much as I hate it, I am thankful for the good quality of life I have had up to now and a family who are now understanding and yes dare i say HELPING ME....to whatever is to come .

So please if you are a smoker and feel able to give it up, you and your family will greaty benefit from it , health wise and in your pocket. You would also be able to enjoy a better quality of life and financially be able do more as a family.

Life is for living and enjoying so we all need to make the most of it as lfe can also be so cruel .

sorry for the epistle

sometimes feel sorry for myself

but am so glad that I dont have to find the strength and courage to give up smoking

to all those of you who want to give up smoking I sincerely wish you the best of luck
