Well managed for 60 years now worsened

HelloI've had asthma for over 60 years yet recently i was admitted to hospital and stayed for 3 days with an asthma attack.

My history was old school

2 puffs ventolin before Qvar twice a day.

I was told at my asthma review that I needed to reduce to just Qvar only using Ventolin as required. I agreed but ended up using ventolin more.

Asthma Nurse changed me to Symbicort.

I foolishly began using Ibuleve gel on a sore knee. Ibuprofen worsens my Asthma but I thought a little gel would be fine.

I had a severe asthma attack and I was blue lighted by ambulance to hospital.

I was prescribed Fostair before leaving hospital. Told not to use ventolin but can take up to 8 puffs a day.

Since then my asthma has not been well controlled. I take between 6 - 8 puffs a day as I have a tight chest and I have a dry cough.

I was wondering if any of you have had a similar experience to me?

Thank you for reading my story.

Sorry to hear of your woes and hope some improvement now? I didn't know ibuleve worsened asthma, have been using it loads for DVT. Did get asthma recently but found some mould, my worst trigger, behind sofa I sleep on, once removed so was my asthma. Is there anything else that may be making yours worse, allergies etc? I'm on Flixotide and haven't had to use Ventolin for months, maybe ask for a change of meds see if that helps? Good luck. 🤞

NSAIDs can be a trigger for some asthmatics, but not all. Aspirin sensitivity is often associated with asthma and a true intolerance can be a sign of Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD). Avoidance of all NSAIDs and omega 6 rich foods is necessary for sufferers.

I don't have a problem with NSAIDS, occ. have to take a Nurofen to damp inflammation down for other issues, though guts don't like more than a few days but which works brilliantly but can't use them now on blood thinners for DVT. Never had a problem with Ibuleve as it works locally. Aspirin has never agreed with me, makes my stomach bleed, so some help some cause other problems as with all meds. Never found any food gave me asthma either but like you say we're all different! 🤔

Thank you so much for your reply. It's good to know that your asthma has been managed with Flixotide which is a new name to me.

I was on the old school use of Ventolin before my maintenance inhaler for years before a consultant explained that Ventolin use was now quite different, in that it was only to be taken as a rescue for the relief of symptoms and the aim was to have maintenance treatment only, with the aim of only having Ventolin once or twice a week, max.

So I was advised to take Symbicort as both maintenance and as a rescue inhaler, up to 8 times a day. My asthma declined and I still needed Ventolin. It was my asthma nurse who changed me to Fostair and that has proven to be a much better inhaler and now I've managed to reduce my reliance on Ventolin. Losing weight also helped significantly. It took quite a while to land on the right inhaler, inhaler strength and doseage in order to get things back on track.

But we're all different and finding a maintenance inhaler that suits is very much down to trial and error. If Fostair is not delivering control of your asthma symptoms, it sounds like you need to have another review of your treatment. I found Fostair 200/6 better than Fostair 100/6. But you may need a different inhaler altogether. Maintenance inhalers can take around 8 weeks to become fully effective, so if things aren't improving by then, it could be that the inhaler isn't suitable or a different doseage or strength of Inhaler is required.

I have a huge sensitivity to aspirin and all NSAIDs and avoid them at all cost. As a result, I also avoid omega 6 rich foods, alcohol, processed foods, preservatives & colourings. Modern food production is heavily reliant on soya and palm oil, both very high in omega 6. Details of things to avoid are detailed under the diet section here samterssociety.org/about-di...

I carry my Ventolin everywhere, my safety blanket, but when things are good (no virus or chest infection) I take Ventolin about once a week, if that. It's been a journey, but if I hadn't experienced it myself, I wouldn't have believed it.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Your experience sounds very much like mine so in a way good to know I'm not alone. It's encouraging to know that yours took a while to manage, so maybe I'm being a little impatient.

Interesting to read about other things to avoid. Thanks for posting the link. I've had a quick scan and it looks very interesting. I am going to return to it to read more thoroughly.

I will also get some more advice on my inhaler.

I'm feeling much more positive now. Thank you

The Fostair you take is included in the MART regime (meaning Maintenance And Reliever Therapy). I'm not sure how long Fostair takes to kick in - some inhalers take up to 3 weeks to fully take effect. Since being on it (with using a spacer) I rarely need ventolin, only during infections or exacerbations.

If you've been taking up to 8 puffs per day for three weeks and your asthma isn't controlled I'd definitely see your gp &/or asthma nurse asap. Check the manufacturer's website to ensure you're taking it correctly. 50 years ago my son was taught short sharp puff which is wrong for some inhalers.

Just to add, my asthma went to pot in my early sixties, 5 x pneumonia, endless infections and antibiotics. It seems mostly because asthma became uncontrolled, I wasn't very knowledgeable about it, just plodding on. Probably went down because unknowingly I'd been taking Seretide with a spacer wrongly for three years 🙄. Upshot, lungs deteriorated, I developed Small Airways Disease then much later CFS. This is why we try to support others in staying as well as can be.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I've been taking Fostair for about 4 months. You raised good points about the best ways of I began with the spacer but went on to take it in the usual way. But I'm delighted to say that after all of your replies I have an appointment for tomorrow afternoon.

This is a great forum. Thank you all once again.

I am so sorry to hear about the way you deteriorated. I think in a way I've been complacent because it was so well controlled for decades. I felt like I was doing something wrong........and maybe I am. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me.

Sorry ro hear of your current issues.I have had asthma for over 30 years now and rumbled along with courses of steroids and antibiotics on a fairly regular basis may be 2 a year but then about 3 years ago having had covid twice despite shielding etc I went down hill rapidly and in the year before April alone had six courses of steroids , sometimes extended ones along with antibs.

Eventually I was referred to Guys and in April had my first dose of Tezspire and since then have not needed one single tablet for my asthma!

I am on Fostair 200/ 6 having previously tried the Mart regime on 100/6 with no success. Also take Spiriva Respimat every morn.

Guys swear that Fostair is the inhaler of choice.

You need a really comprehensive asthma review.

Hope you get sorted.

Thank you so much for your reply. You have had a really tough time with your Asthma. Its good to hear that you finally gained some relief.

Tezspire is a new name to me but given your success, I will keep a note of it, just in case.

Thank you

Post here how your appointment went. I hope they find a way to manage your asthma, or at least help you get through the tough part (e.g. oral prednisolone).

Did the bad no-control times start after the suggested medication change, or did they come out of the blue?

Thank you for your reply.

My asthma deteriorated when they stopped my old way of Ventolin before Qvar twice a day.

I had a very bad asthma attack which I could only put down to the deterioration and thst I had been using Ibuleve fir my bad knee.

My appointment went very well. It appears I have had an untreated infection in my lungs since my admission 6 months ago. I was never prescribed antibiotics.

My immune system has been trying which is why has contributing to worsening asthma.

I have been prescribed antibiotics, steroids and my Fostair has been doubled. If my asthma does not improve I'm to go back.

I have to thank all of who you who replied to me, as it was your encouragement and advice that helped me. Looking back I honestly dont know why I was so foolish but maybe rundown and not thinking too clearly as Asthma was never a problem.

Thank goodness for this forum.

I wish all of you good health. Xx
