hi… in the night and first thing in the morning I cough on and off which seems like hours. I take montelukast every night .. I think it may be the chilled air in the morning and during the night that starts me off.. feel like I’m going round in circles .im having an endoscopy next month as I have a hernia probably bought on by all the coughing I’ve done over the years .. my chest is rattling during the night .. I started montelukast in the summer and it worked immediately and I felt like I was myself again.. now I’m so down and tired and just want to hibernate .. I’ve been admitted several times with pneumonia with asthma attacks but the doctors don’t seem to care , they give you some meds and pumps and that’s the end of it .. anyone else having coughing attacks thing in the morning?

Hi Shiraz I can only speak for myself - my asthma has always been worse at night as has my son's and a granddaughter. At the moment I'm taking two puffs of MART Fostair at bedtime whereas 3 weeks ago one puff was sufficient. The temperature and humidity have definitely changed. It's a fact that we're breathing out moisture all night long so it's essential that my bedroom is ventilated so as I cannot sleep with windows open the door is wide open. I live alone so there must be soon much extra moisture from a couple!

I'd suggest door open, ASAP see your gp or respiratory person to ensure your asthma is controlled - I know mine isn't on a lowest dose now the season has changed - very heavy rains in my area & floods have been everywhere so the atmosphere is very humid/damp indeed. (The town's river is normally a brook or stream). Some people find a raised bedhead helps either on large books or the bed raisers, wedge of triangular cushion you can buy

You also have the helpline for advice 0300 222 5800 09.15 to 5pm Mon to Friday

My asthma has been out of control since early August, so I automatically wonder if your asthma is behind this. I used to have horrendous coughing fits in the morning, pre going on asthma inhalers.

From the medic angle, yes, talk to your GP to get referred to somebody good, who can explore what is going on, also talk to the asthma UK helpline, who are brilliant. If you can afford it, and are getting nowhere, go and see a consultant privately for some ideas. I saw a respiratory physio privately, it was money well spent.

From the non medic angle, go overboard on cleaning, particularly bedding, using air purifiers, dehumidifiers, checking for mould, putting a scarf round your mouth when going out in the cold etc

Best of luck

If yr chest is rattling, there must be mucous. We bronchiectasis people have to do lung clearance( acbt, huffing technique).u can read up on aluk website on techniques.if yr able to get it up on dedicated sessions,u may not cough as much

I am the same and the colder damp air definitely contributes, my cough has been worse the past week but my asthma isn’t well controlled at the moment. Do you sleep propped up at all? I do and have found it helps the drowning feeling I used to get from mucus. Does your bedroom get particularly cold especially at night?

I agree with the suggestion about seeing an asthma physio. I just saw one on the NHS last week and was diagnosed with dysfunctional breathing. I’ve been given some exercises to start with to relearn how to breathe properly (bizarre right, your body can forget how to breathe properly) and has also referred me for pulmonary rehab too.

Hi Shiraz.

I agree that you should seek medical attention for your awful cough and exhaustion whether it's continuing to seek out GP intervention or seeking out a specialist consultation.

I can only speak from my own experience. I had an unresolved cough for 18 months a few years ago. GP surgery kept telling me I was on the best treatment package but I was exhausted through coughing and never getting any better whilst trying to work full time and run a home.

In desperation, I organised a private appointment with a Hospital Consultant specialising in Unresolved Cough. This has been been life saver. It's worth doing if you can pay for an initial private consultation and if you are at an impasse with your GP surgery.

I had a bad winter last winter and picked up a number of respiratory infections and consequently ended up with a terrible cough that lasted several months. However, unlike the cough that lasted 18 months, it has resolved and there were periods where it was much better.

The difference for me has been seeing a hospital team specialising in complex severe asthma and unresolved cough. I've seen speech and language therapists and respiratory physiotherapists, had a change of medication and a range of investigations to rule out other causes. I can't thank them enough.

I am sensitive to temperature changes, especially the cold dry air and the winter is always a problem for me. I keep my home warm and use humidifiers as moist air suits me, though this is very individual as some people struggle with humidity.

Swimming is very good for me. The exercise and the warm humid air suit my lungs. I've found that humming and singing are helpful too.

I hope you find a way forward and start to feel better very soon.

If your asthma worsens in the morning (after spending 8+ hrs in bed presumably), they usually recommend testing for allergies for dust mite, and controlling the sleeping environment.

Like other folks, I can only speak for myself. All of my mattresses and pillows are encased in PU and PE plastic, and there is a HEPA filter blowing purified air into my face during the night non-stop. All blankets and sheets are non-cotton (polyester and polypropyelee), placed on top of the plastic, and washed at 60C wheekly. The bedroom has no furniture, except for the plastic-encased bed. No carpets (obviouysly) and no pets, humidity control to keep the air under 50%RH (which means AC in the summer). Shower before going to bed. Combined with numerous medications (including montelucast, like in your case) this allows me to get a good night sleep and to prepare for the challenges of the day.

Hi Shiraz, just a little tip. I find if I can’t stop coughing, especially at night, a smear of Vicks vapour rub on the throat or just inside the nostrils will take away the urge to cough and help with mucus problems.

Hi Shiraz! I think that you should better visit a doctor, because self-medication may be dangerous... But as for my experience: I had similar cough when I quit smoking and my lungs began to cleanse. I coughed all night and felt very tired every morning. It was easier with herbal tea, like mullein extract amazon.com/USDA-Organic-Mul... or camomile with honey. But you should better check it with your doctor because the reasons may be different..

Sometimes self medication is all you've got, seen doctor this wk and she didn't know what to give me so asked me what I wanted!!!

I picked my inhalers up from the chemist this morning and the doctor prescribed the wrong ones.. that’s why we sometimes have to self medicate.. I have a face to face with a medical herbal specialist next week, she is amazing I’ve used her before and she has worked wonders for my dad who has COPD and arthritis high cholesterol and diabetes, after 3 months he has more energy, his pain has reduced significantly and he is so much happier in himself … her name is Iulia Barta and the link to her website is herbalistnaturalcare.co.uk if you have the budget she is well worth investing in x

montelukast has horrible side effects and didn’t worked for me ! What you are describing is so much similar to what I have! You should try to go on Prednisone even a low daily dose of 5 mg should do the job! I have a horrible chronic cough for 4 years and nothing seems to help even inhalers…. But you should try prednisone which is a steroid! And get your blood checked for eosinophils !

I was on steroids for 6 years and came off of them due to the damage they were causing . I’ve just had and endoscopy and a colonoscopy and had 5 biopsies taken so dreading the results .. I brought an air purifier a salt lamp and grounding sheet and am finally getting better .. I also get herbal medicines from a herbalist in Scotland, she is amazing

That’s amazing that you were able to do this! Praying that your health improves more and more!

Have you been give the pneumonia injection? If not you must ask your GP for it. I’m having to this injection every 5 years instead of every 10 as my immune system is so bad.

I have problems in the morning and at night if it get to cold I can’t stop coughing, the cold air is no good for us. I also keep being told I need to sleep propped up with a few pillows which does help but I can only sleep that way for a couple of night as I’ve always preferred to sleep with one pillow or non at all which I keep getting told off about by the asthma nurses.

My best advice is to make sure your bedroom doesn’t get too cold or too hot. If you put the heating up more try having a humidifier in your bedroom as I use one most of the year round as I find it stops the bedroom from getting to dry.

hey thank you for your kind reply … I’ve never been offered the pneumonia vaccination although I’ve had pneumonia several times .. this morning I woke up feeling like I had the worst cold, coughing and sneezing.. it was definitely the cold air as when I got up and went to work it had disappeared .. the air purifier is on automatic all the time .. that helps too and I have a salt lamp.. my herbalist practitioner has just prescribed my iron tablets as I have been waiting 2 weeks to get them from my GP still no prescription I also take pro biotics not sure what else we can all do 🤔
