I have been given montelukast too and I am scared to take seeing the shocking side effects. Also I am not sure when to take it as I take co codamol at bed time for another health issue. Can anyone advise please.

I've been taking Montelucast for years with no side effects. If I miss a dose my symptoms become much worse. It's understandable to be concerned but people generally who are doing well won't necessarily post about it.

You could ring up the helpline about when it is best to take.

Thank you Canine12.

I’ve been using Montelukast for over 4 years now and, it truly has been an excellent addition to my asthma armoury. I take it around 10.30 pm - with no side effects at all. However, some people say it gave them scary dreams - so it changed to the morning and - problem solved. It you have any issues involving your mental health - please, please check with your GP/Asthma nurse. Personally, as well asthma, I have numerous other health issues meaning I’m taking 37 tablets a day (not all different) - but my GP always checks that they are all okay……

hi i take montelukast every night and I’ve slept like a baby ever since.. my cough has improved. I’m not sure how they would affect the co codamol … I know everyone is different with medications but I’ve had no side effects with the montelukast.. maybe call you GP

I have been on them so long I dont actually know how long. I take mine in the morning due to having disturbed sleep. Have had no issues since changing from night time to morning. I dont generally read the side affects part of information leaflet. It could be a very low percentage of people that had a particular side affect but it can make you worried. Like others had said speak to the helpline,Gp or your pharmacist.

Agree - I think it’s best not to read about potential side effects of any drug then see what happens!!

Oh my word.. I've been on them years and keep getting very vivid dreams can't say scary one but very messed up dreams so vivid I know what someone's told me in my dream! Now reading these comments it maybe down to these??? I may swap to mornings just worried I'll get my cough and have to sleep upright again... I may speak with my pharmacist when I go in Wednesday.. I never read leaflets unless starting something causes me to read them cuz it's full of things that probably won't happen

I've been taking it for 11 years, absolutely no side effects whatsoever and I take it after supper about 7.30 - 8pm with my magnesium and a vitamin D3. If I went to bed earlier than 11pm (when I take BP med statin Carbocysteine and inhaler) I might take supper & monthlukast earlier. Personally I only think twice when there's a side effect to 1 in a 100 written on the leaflet then take the medication and keep an eye out. I dont generally think the worst especially if the med can really really help me.

Speak to the pharmacist about monte and co-codamol

Good morning Cushti. You may find the quickest way to check on when to take your tablets is asking your Pharmacy. Brian

Hi, I've been taking Montelukast for about 7 months now with no sideffects. I will add it has had a huge improvement to my asthma as I'm able to run without struggling with my chest, to the point where i can slow my breathing down which ive never been able to do and my wheezing has all but disappeared.I hope this helps

hi. I have also taken for 4years. Few funny dreams to start with but I switched to taking in mornings as this suits me better. It takes a few weeks to work and came off it once to see if I still nededed it. But that was a big mistake. Deffo keeps symptoms at bay . Hope this helps. 😀

I’ve been on Montelukast for about 20 years - only side effect is I can breath better !! I take mine at night as I was waking up at night with breathing issues. It may take it in the morning- doesn’t actually matter. The side effects were concerning for young men when it was originally launched but dosage had been modified. It was a game changer for me and I’m so pleased my asthma nurse put me on it

I've been on it years for emphysema it is primarily for asthma but it helps me breath better.. Never had a side affect off it at all.. Only side affect I get is if I don't take it of a nighttime.. Its last thing I take before laying down an going to sleep.. Opens my Airways and has made laying flat possible again.. Try it, I understand your scared but just try it.. At worse if u don't like it you just stop.. I try to avoid leaflets unless I start feeling funny from something new.. Trust ur Dr or nurse whoever gave it you

Hi, I have been taking Montelukast for many years and my asthma is very well controlled. There are always certain medications that don't agree with you, but it is a case of such and see. Try them, and if they work you should have your asthma under control of. Night time.

I've been on Montelukast for 8 years now with no problems. My dreams could be quite vivid before then so I don't know if that's happened or not.

I have also been taking Montelukast for years with no side effects. However I would say when I started taking it my dreams were a bit more vivid. But for me the upside definitely out weighs the dreams.

Cheers

I have been taking montelukast for many years and no side effects, except in the early days, some very vivid dreams but not that much anymore.

I took montelukast for a number of years, didn't get on well with taking it of an evening .... it made me have very lucid nightmares and made me a bit warmer in bed.

So I eventually swapped to a morning taking it (after giving the evening a fair go) ... took it for years like that despite me saying I don't think it's doing anything.... finally a consultant agreed I was on enough stuff the montelukast was doing little to nothing and it was worth a try stopping it

Hi, re your "montelukast with co codomal" - It's usually safe to take these two together - I also checkon on internet. Don't take Paracetamol and paracetamol is in co codamol, also don't take Iburophen type drugs, not good with asthma.

Do you tale 30/500 or 8/50 co-codamol, makes no difference just wondering.

i used ti take montelukast - did not care for it and did not help me, helps a lot of people though.

Thank you so much everybody for very positive and encouraging & useful comments & suggestions. I really appreciate it. I think I will start taking montelukast as I am having muscular spasm/ tightness of chest, upper back and sides and don't think I've any other options to calm it down. Thank you all.

Good to read so many positive comments here. Makes me want to try it again! My own experience was stomach issues, not nightmares. There’s a Facebook group about Montelukast and it seems the bad side effects mostly affect children. I came off it without any withdrawal problems.
