Hi, I was wondering if anyone can suggest an alternative to this medication that I can talk to my daughters consultant about.
she is 5 and has been put in this for her chronic nighttime cough, but the side effects are horrific and getting worse.
I took her off it for a couple of days and the side effects started to reduce, so I know it’s linked. But it has meant her cough has come back with an vengeance and keeps her up all night, so we have put her back on the tablets, and going to try and get an appt with her consultant.
but I wanted to be armed with some suggestions for alternatives.
TIA

I would be loathed to give advice about childrens medication. But I can totally feel your pain. Maybe ask if changing the time the medication could be day taken is possible. Some Adults have side affects with Montelukast. You could give the helpline a call, they are better placed to give the appropriate advice.
Maybe you would find it beneficial to discuss your concerns with the Asthma UK nurses, once they're available after Easter. They're very knowledgeable and can recommend next steps, alternatives or find a way through the fog , until you next see your child's specialist.
Montelukast sounds like it's working on the cough, so putting side effects aside, that's really important to know, in terms of understanding potential triggers for the nighttime cough. It may be as simple as taking the medication at a different time of day. But by talking it through, other options may be found.
The helpline number is 0300 222 5800 and opens again at 9.15am on Tuesday, 2nd April.
