Counter-productive Montelukast treatment?

Hi there people, long time forum watcher and a few times poster, hope you’re all well.

Just wanted some advice…

My doctor last week put me on montelukast for breathing problems, throat crackle and wheezing and constant mucus and cough which affected my chest .

I’ve been on montelukast for 4 days they have helped my cough and breathing then morning, the green phlegm monster has reared its head for the sequel that nobody wants to see!

I read the side affects of montelukast and it says sinus infection and chest infection are the common side effects.

I was wondering, has anyone had experience of this when they started taking them and did you stop taking it as I don’t really want to keep getting more infections if it’s a side effect of the montelukast!

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated and I hope you all have a great weekend ,thank you.

hiya

I have been on Montelukast long term (about 10 years) and it is vital part of my treatment for Asthma/COPD

I would highly recommend it

I think any side effects should go after a few weeks

If your symptoms are worsening perhaps discuss with your care team very unlikely to be side effects but if it is they will be able to prescribe something else

Good luck!!

Just be aware Montelucast doesn't help everyone. I was on it for two years, and all it did for me was to unsettle my sleep. It did not help in any way, and thank goodness I am off it now. My asthma seems not linked to allergies, though is triggered by sensitivities, notably indoor air pollution, but that isn't helped by Montelukast.

Hi I been on Montelukast for a long time and have seen the benefits. I think it would be worth your while persevering and if things dont improve speak to your GP. I hope thing improve soon .

Hi,I too am on montelukast, but I don't seem to catch any more viral infections than I did before going on it. It does modulate an aspect of the immune system, so technically it could lead to an increase in colds etc, but I haven't seen that.

I've used Montelukast for some years and haven't noticed an increase in the number of infections, if anything my sinuses are clearer. But you should discuss your experiences with your prescribing doctor as they should monitor any potential side effects and decide if this is a coincidence (& treat the infection) or if you need to stop taking Montelukast.

Hey everyone hope you’re all good and many thanks for your replies I relay appreciate it.

I’ll take all the advice on board and see my gp for advice and possible some rescue meds. 🙈🤦‍♂️

Just a bit annoying as It was getting easier to breathe on it and now I might have another infection, I’ll need to keep a stamp card at this rate to keep up with how many I’ve had this winter!😂

Thanks all take care and enjoy the rest of your evening.

montelukast was a game changer for me - am always careful not to read anything about potential side effects in case I get them ….!! Keep a note and give your asthma clinic feedback.

I've been on Montelucast for over 10 years. I rarely get chest infections or sinus infections. Side effects aren't really noticeable to be honest. When I've not taken it for a day or so due to forgetting to pick up my prescription my asthma deteriorated both times quite a bit. The helpline is good for discussing meds etc. And checking with your GP is also a good idea.

I had similar problems when I started montelukast. I have now been on them for over three and found that they have made a difference especially at night. I have been told not to stop them by my respiratory consultant.

I've been on Montelukast for many years. I don't think it's helpful at all for my allergic asthma but I continue to take it as I need every help I can get with my allergic asthma.

I used and found it great for improving my breathing etc. But had to stop taking it as it caused low flat mood and increasing depression. I tried a number of times but the same result each time. My husband could spot the change even without knowing I was taking the montelukast. So disappointing as its brilliant for improving my breathing ☹️

I've been taking Montelukast for 3 months and for me it's been a game changer. I have severe allergies, asthma and lung problems. Steroids were no longer controlling my symptoms. Montelukast has taken me completely by surprise and all but ceased the need for steroids. I'm just praying it continues. I've recently had a virus and chest infection but even that was mild compared to before Montelukast. Previously a chest infection would wipe me out and leave me in A&E. Try to concentrate on the positives. For the people it works for and that's not everyone its life changing. Hope this helps.
