I've been on Montelukast for years and it's really helped my allergies and nasal health, subsequently my asthma. Apart from a few vivid dreams I've not experienced any side effects. It doesn't work for everyone, but you'll know after the first month if it's had a positive impact, same for any side effects.

I have been prescribed

Carbocisteine, also called carbocysteine, is a mucolytic that reduces the viscosity of sputum and so can be used to help relieve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and bronchiectasis by allowing the sufferer to bring up sputum more easily

I thought Montelukast was for asthma symptoms

Montelukast is used to prevent the symptoms of asthma. It's usually prescribed when asthma is mild and can stop it from getting worse.

It can also help people with asthma who have breathing difficulties when they exercise (exercise-induced asthma) and seasonal allergies, such as sneezing, itchiness and a blocked or runny nose (allergic rhinitis)

I was prescribed Montelukast for mucous in throat. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. I tried it for 2 months. I didn't have any side effects though so it's worth trying. I suppose it depends on what's causing it.Haven't found anything to help yet, driving me mad too !

Thanks for your reply. I do take antihistamine tablets and have flixonase nasal spray. I have Neilmed nasal rinses too. Steaming helps but you can't be doing that all day! Keep trying different things but haven't found that magic solution yet!

I have Sterimar at moment as I use it if going on holiday, as you say, easier to use. Haven't been offered Beconase though.

montelukast is prescribed for asthma. I take carbocisteine to help thin the mucous and so make it easier to cough up

It's definitely worth a try Julesc12. I've taken it for many years with no ill effects - and I consider myself quite sensitive. Good luck, P

Montelukast does nothing for my allergies and asthma. Nothing!! Zyrtec D helps more. I still take the montelukast though just because I have it. The post nasal drip is constant.
