Covid/ Prednisolone

So after avoiding it for almost 3 years, Covid has finally struck. I tested positive on Tuesday. At present have a bad head cold, aches and pains and yesterday a high temperature. This evening a cough has started. My concern now is that in the first week of January I needed a 5 day course of prednisolone as following a flu type virus, my asthma got out of control. Am I more likely to have covid complications/respiratory reaction due to these recent steroids?

I had a flu like virus beginning of Dec which affected my asthma and I had a week of steriods . The virus symptoms lasted 2 weeks. On Christmas eve I tested positive for covid. The covid symptoms were like a very bad cold but no where as bad as I thought they would be. My yearly appointment with the consultant yesterday said being fully vaccinated made covid less serious. Speedy recovery

Thanks for that, that is reassuring as it sounds very similar to my scenario. I'll hope my covid is the same.

How are you getting on misscrisps?

No feeling well at all, actually. Heavy chest, exhausted, sleeping a lot. Quite breathless but taking extra ventolin and keeping an eye on my pulse oximeter readings. Day 6 so I was hoping I'd be over the worst. Thanks for asking.

I had covid for a couple of weeks in the autumn, not very nice, but not much effect on my asthma.

I had a nasty cold in December, which has resulted in bad asthma attack, hospital and five weeks of pred.

Thank you. 5 weeks of pred! That sounds bad, hope you're recovering now. Having got through the bad fluey virus at the beginning of January, it sounds like this may be slightly easier. At the moment I am coughing a lot but it does seem more upper than lower congestion. Fingers crossed.

Just getting over Covid that I had for over two weeks, didn't affect my asthma as it did in the first wave but ended up with hives at the end of it! Very odd. I have a course of steroid I keep at home but didn't need them in the end, just a bit of extra Ventolin. Take care!

Thanks, I'm taking extra ventolin and extra symbicort so hopefully that will be enough. Weird re the hives!

I know, apparently it can happen if your immune system is overstimulated, which it probably was fighting Covid!

So after feeling a bit better over the weekend, I felt much worse yesterday, really breathless and can't speak for coughing. Spoke to GP who has prescribed Amoxicillin (as covid is a virus I'm not sure if it will help but I'll take it anyway!) And a prescription for Pred if I don't improve in 48 hours. Also got to monitor my blood/oxygen level 3 times a day and hubby has to watch out for me becoming 'dazed or confused or looking ghastly '....not sure he'll notice the difference 🙄🤞

I can totally relate to what you're going through—last year I also faced Covid after avoiding it for a while. During that time, I had a similar experience with Prednisolone, and it really helped me manage my asthma flare-up as well. In terms of your concern, it's true that taking steroids like Prednisolone can suppress the immune system, which could potentially make you more vulnerable to complications if you're already sick. However, the steroids should help manage your asthma symptoms and reduce inflammation in your airways, which can be beneficial when dealing with Covid, especially with respiratory issues.

My advice would be to stay in close contact with your doctor, especially since you've had a recent history of asthma flare-ups. They can guide you on how best to balance your medication and keep a close eye on your symptoms to avoid complications. Make sure to monitor your breathing and seek medical attention if you feel your asthma worsening or if your symptoms don't improve.

Thank you for replying. Actually this post is from 2 years ago. Ultimately I found COVID caused less asthma problems than my usual chest infections. It was the start of a rough year with 5 courses of steroids in all. But since changing Symbicort 200/6 a year ago things have been so much better.
