yes I take vitamin D through winter months oct to march. It does help a bit to reduce colds, seems to be quite normal to be low on vitamins with asthma.
Daily i take 2000iu of vitamin D3 , 3000iu In winter months. Im convinced it helps a lot with the immune system therefore avoiding catching bugs. gaming osteopenia I know for sure that my bones need it. To ensure the D3 gets to my bones I also take a daily vitamin K2
I'm not sure it's made any particular difference to my asthma to be honest, but pretty much everyone needs it, especially in a northern hemisphere winter, and the official definition of a deficiency doesn't kick in until you're pretty low and feeling it. I was that low once and it was rubbish - my ribs and legs really hurt. So I take it for my bones and as a generally good thing.
I do have a generally good immune system - I don't catch things that often (though my asthma doesn't like it when I do!) But I think I was lucky enough to have that before the regular Vit D.
I use a spray as I believe sublingual is absorbed better than oral. It's 3000 iU and I take 3 sprays once a week (a consultant once tried me on 10,000 iU to see if it helped my asthma and it came in pills of 10,000 iU to take once a week - he said it was fine to take that much in one go so I do that now as it's easier than remembering every day.)
I do also take it in summer but a bit less - I've found I can still get the symptoms in summer at times especially as I am careful about wearing sun protection.
I read a study, though, which suggested that such high doses at once are not absorbed as well as daily. It’s as if it is too much to handle at once. Many studies of Vit D tried assorted dosing schedules.
Retired nurse anesthetist here. I take 5,000u every other day.
Hi Homely2, I am so pleased to read we were helpful to you on the helpline, it's always great to read positive feedback 😇
Just a note to all on Vitamin D. Yes its good to take a daily over the counter supplement in the winter months and people with lung conditions are especially prone to lowered vitamin D.
However, don't be tempted to take a higher dose than the government recommendation unless you have had a blood test that shows a much lowered level - thus you are needing higher amounts. Too much Vitamin D can be harmful. I'll pop on the NHS advice FYI: nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-...
I take 5,000iu VitD3 oil based spray, 500iu VitK2 Mk7 oil based spray and 1480mg magnesium citrate. Vit D & K are fat soluble so are better absorbed if taken with fat. VitD requires its co-factors K and mag in order to be absorbed efficiently and to avoid calcification in soft tissues (plaque).
I take the combo in order to keep my immune system up to snuff but also to counter the side effects of steroids on my bone and dental health. Only thing to watch is taking VitK with Warfarin.
Vit D is processed by the liver and becomes a hormone and acts as an anti-inflammatory. That could be why it's been recommended, but small doses won't have this affect.
take vit d and other sups nothing works, even my meds dont work any more. back to hospital tomorrow, am hoping they are going to say i can have the injections, i a so sick of asthma, ruining my life over 20 years.
