Hi. My asthma nurse thinks my flare up is due to cats (never happened before) I have always had a cat in the home and I’m 48. They want to me to try Montelukast i’m a bit scared of the side effects. Can anyone recommend a good antihistamine or are they all the same. thanks 😊

Best Antihistamine for Asthma
Hi, Many of my triggers are allergy based (horses, guinea pigs, tree pollen and moulds being some of my biggest nemesis. I was prescribed Fexofenadine from the immunologist at the hospital and on the whole keeps things in check. I am also on Montelukast and don’t suffer any obvious side effects, though to be fair, I would rather a few minor side effects than pretty much living in hospital! 😉I hope you find what works for you soon. Some friends used to say “just avoid the horses and you’ll be fine!” Yup, horses I can spot from a distance, what isn’t visible is who has been near them and I was caught out in many an occasion by that.
If you are however looking for an over the counter antihistamine I do really rate good old fashioned Piriton.
Take care
Hi Hopes.I’m on Montelukast and can honestly say I have had no adverse effects. It also had the added benefit of unblocking my nose.
For allergies I have taken Loratadine for years - available over the counter, very cheap. (I originally got this on prescription as Clarytin, but it became cheaper to buy)
My consultant told me on my last review that when my symptoms were problematic I could double the dose on this or my GP might add in an additional one. ( My GP no longer prescribes antihistamine!)
Thanks I will give them a try x
Definitely give the montelukast a try - most people have no bad effects. Remember that people don't post all-wonderful reviews of things so we only hear the bad.
As others have said, antihistamines vary as to what works for each person. Some find loratidine great, others cetirizine, others fexofenadine (which is prescription only so one would need to try the other options first) and, as echoblue said, some people find Piriton/chlorphenamine the best.
But montelukast can be great for allergy related asthma.
Thanks I will give montelukast agoX
Hi Hopes1
I had 2 cats for years one died still have one with no allergies to either.
Perfume, smoke, scented candles, even a person walking by either smoking or with a smell of smoke ditto for perfume.
I grill everything with water in the drip tray and this prevents the the fat from smoking causing me to have uncontrollable coughing.
I started to use Avayms 27.5 spray and this has really made a big difference, also Cetirzime daily. I change pillow cases every second day.
Hope this helps.

I've been on monteleukast at bedtime 10 mg maybe decades and I wouldn't worry about the side effects. It could be you picked up a virus and that has triggered your asthma. Covid is very much out there. To be sure about kitty, ask your allergy office to skin test you to cats. Thats an easy one. I cannot tolerate antihistamine or decongestant of any kind. They all trigger my asthma, dry my chest out.
Zyrtec (cetirizine) works well for me, Benadryl when I'm really bad
You can become allergic to anything without warning - I had cats for many years thinking I wasn’t affected but when my last one died we didn’t replace her and what do you know …. My asthma improved massively !!
