Hey I have just been advised by my mental health team to start Promethazine but I’m unsure about it as I suffer from brittle asthma and wake up in attacks. Just wondering if anyone was on the same?

Need so advice about medication
I’d suggest calling up your consultant/resp team and asking them. There are 2 types of promethazine (hydrochloride and teoclate) the latter of which has a caution for asthmatics (not a contraindication tho).
So contract your resp team and ask them
Hope this helps
I already have and they wasn’t to sure as they haven’t heard of it being used with my condition
It’s not contraindicated (a big no) so it’s going to be down to how comfortable you feel. If you are willing to try it and see if it helps whilst not affecting your lungs then go for it. If you’re not comfortable with trying it then speak to the team who prescribed it as they may find an alternative.
Caution basically means ‘some people have issues but not everyone’ which is the same for aspirin. Some asthmatics are a-ok with aspirin, whilst others really can’t tolerate it cause it sets off their lungs.
Hopefully someone will have experience or someone on a Facebook group will be able to get back to you with their personal experience, but I expect it’s a marmite drug, some people will say no issues, others will say it gave them problems
Hope this helps and do what you feel comfortable doing - try and see OR contact and change the med
It's a powerful sleep aid. I've had it a few times and felt really out of it! I've never heard of it being used for asthma though?
Hi,
It’s a standard drug that mental health teams use. If you tell them you can’t take it, there are plenty of others they can use.
I tried it for ages. I had a consultant who had me on the highest dose possible.... think they gave me so much of the stuff as a kid that I’m immune to it.
The care coordinator couldn’t work out how I could be on the max dose in the day and functioning normally. In the end I told them 😂😂😂
They use it to calm people down. Believe me, they have a sack full of drugs and a lot are a load better than phenegan.
... they use phenergan for allergic asthma. Tiny little blue tablets.
Hi Luna... I am a Psychiatric Nurse with a speciality in Substance Abuse. Promethazine is the generic for Phenergan. It is used for nausea & vomiting. It has a wonderful side effect of leaving one loopy & sleepy. Because of that, it highly abused. There is Zofran which maybe a better choice for nausea & vomiting. It helps with a crummy tummy without getting one high. Neither medication is used for mental health... Unless, it is an eating disorder. I hope this helps. Good luck. Serena
It’s a antihistamine used sometimes as a sleeping tablet, it’s what a psychiatrist gave me to help me sleep, also used for allergies, it’s in over the counter medication like night nurse I believe but could be wrong, it didn’t affect my asthma/copd but unfortunately for me it didn’t have the desired affect of making me sleep, all the best
