Montekulast

My 11 year has just been prescribed Montekulast - to use on top of two brands of anti histamines and a purple inhaler. Bit nervous about side effects. How have other parents with children on Montekulast got on?

Hi Swiftjo,

I don’t have a child on Montelukast, but I do take it myself and have had no side effects at all.

I was once prescribed the children’s version of this, presumably the pharmacist couldn’t get the adult ones, and they were not very nice. They weren’t horrible, just a bit ? On the plus side, once I had taken it the taste didn’t linger.

Not my own kids but know a couple under 12s on it (one who started it aged 6/7 now 13/14 and one aged 8/9 now 11). They both get on well with it with no major side effects.

Hope this helps

Same as Troilus, I take it with no issues - and yes the children's chewable ones are horrible if you're an adult who doesn't like the texture of chewing tablets!

A friend's 10 year old has been on montelukast for years with no issues either. Lots of people talk about the awful effects of it - but huge numbers of people take it with no problem.

My 2 x 8 yr olds have been on it for at least 4 years. They love their tasty chewy tablet at bedtime!

I have heard that Montelukast can promote anger. My 2 have quite explosive tempers, but I think that’s just the nature of sibling rivalry in twins and their personalities.
