Hi I haven’t heard of it causing this side effect, most people get mood swings with it :-) I don’t have any side effects thankfully. You definitely need to see a GP about that :-)

I had no side effects from it and I have been on it a while

I’ve been on it for nearly 10 years. I get the occasional stomach pain and bad heartburn but that’s about it. Best thing is to go back and see your doctor.

HI miles

Im just curious to your stomach pain because of montelukast. I have been on it 25 yrs and thought with no side effects I thought.

The last couple of yrs every few months would say. I get a servere ache in the middle of my stomach that lasts all night and eases off the next day. I am left with the whole edge of my stomach being an ache.

I Have had 3 flare ups in the last 6 weeks and this last time was the worst even with omprezole it lasted a few days,I have got heartburn with it on and off, the doctor assumes its reflux and admittedly I had been out drinking before the last 2 flare ups. but have had this even when i don't drink. so wondering if your stomach pain is servere or anything like mine is, whether mine could be because been on I montelukast so long.

Montelukast should be reviewed after four weeks to ensure it's working as expected. This is done by stopping it, under doctor's supervision. A return of asthma symptoms indicates that Montelukast was working. But any side effects should decrease.

The only way to find out if Montelukast is the culprit is to stop taking it. Make sure you tell your doctor what you're doing.

Otherwise if your vomiting continues then something else is happening and you definitely need to see your doctor.

Side effects should be notified by your doctor on the yellow card system.

There's an alternative to Montelukast so you could try that, if necessary.

Hope you get this resolved.

Hi poobah,

I saw a respiratory consultant in London last week who said Montelukast only works for about 25% of people who take it.

He told me to stop taking it and see if it makes any difference (which I have yet to do). I am seeing my asthma nurse in about 2 weeks time and will see what she says.

That statistic is interesting, only 25%. Keep us posted.

Hi Hansylou.

I was put on montelucast over 3 years ago and immediately felt unwell. High temperatures and aches. I mentioned it at an emergency doctor appointment and was told to continue taking it.

My aches and high temperatures continued so I stopped it after advice from a pharmacist. I don’t mean to cause you to panic but my story then becomes a little scary as I was admitted to hospital.

I was diagnosed with a rare type of vasculitis called Churg Strauss Syndrome which was a listed side effect of montelukast.

Having this condition turned my world upside down but doctors refused to link my condition to the drug despite the facts being printed on the montelukast leaflet.

My advice would be to see a doctor and seek their opinion about the side effects of the drug.

Not montelykast, but I’ve had extremely unpleasant side effects that aren’t typical for other meds. Doesn’t matter how rare it is. It’s 100% for you. 😧
