Itchy chin when coughing?

I’m currently being investigated for Asthma and have been put on Salbutamol which seems to help relieve symptoms. I’m not sure if this is related (but I’d heard through the grape vine) that an itchy chin when coughing can be linked to asthma? It’s the weirdest sensation... All very new to this!

I’ve had asthma since a toddler (now 47) and as long as I can remember I’ve had an itchy chin when my asthma is flaring up, sometimes it spreads over my neck and chest too.

It’s so bizarre, is it something to do with histamine release? I do have awful allergies. What’s the best course of action for an asthma flare up?

It’s possibly to do with allergic asthma (although the phenomenon has been seen in non-allergic also so 🤷‍♀️). Best course of action for asthma is to contact your GP tomorrow and inform them there is an issue (esp if you’re using your salbutamol a lot... just say it works but doesn’t last). Ideally you should be on a preventer inhaler to prevent issues rather than a reliever (which is what salbutamol is) which relieves an issue (literally does what says in the tin! 😅). Usually with asthma flares they may prescribe a short course of steroids to calm everything down.

It may also be worth tracking your peak flow as that can help show/indicate towards asthma in a lot of cases (again discuss this with your GP and they should be able to prescribe you a PF meter).

Ideally if it is asthma you shouldn’t have any symptoms at all (so no coughing or itchy chins 😉). I’m assuming you’re already taking a regular antihistamine but if not another thing that’s worth discussing (or even asking for a stronger one).

If you’re need more advice The AUK helpline nurses are great and can be reached on 0300 2225800 M-F 9-5. Alternatively their WhatsApp service is 07378 606728.

Hope this helps and you feel better soon

Thank-you so much for your reply - I really appreciate the information - it’s super helpful (especially as someone who’s a rookie in terms of asthma!). I currently suffer with all manner of weird allergies and ailments - including an allergy to the cold called Cold Urticaria so I’m relatively versed in antihistamines etc. 😂😅

Thanks a bunch again! I will speak to my GP and hopefully get to the bottom of it ☺️

Ha. I have cold urticaria also (as well as chronic urticaria and idiopathic angiodema which is such fun 😅). Hopefully they can get on top of it for you!

Me! As a child when my chin started to itch I knew I was in for a bad time even before my chest got tight. My mum (nurse) and dad (pharmacist) thought I was just weird, but now 40 years later I’m reading that it’s a known symptom. I was never diagnosed with asthma when I was little because I couldn’t get air in, and asthma then was not being able to breathe out. All changed now. But itchy chin, definitely. 😁
