Coughing and chest pain
Hi there, coughing can be the main symptom of asthma. There is a thing called cough variant asthma, where it is the only symptom. I cough, but I also have a wheeze.
Chest pain and asthma can also go together, but chest pain is often a symptom of a chest infection or indeed pulled muscles from coughing and tightness.
However chest pain shouldn’t be ignored, if you have chest pain and haven’t seen a doctor you should.
Failing that call the Asthma Uk helpline on Monday morning.

My chest pain led to a diagnosis of asthma, but I also used to get anxiety chest pains as well; I don't have a cough. The main point about asthma is that it is reversible, and that is the test. Best take Risabel's advice and have it checked out properly. You often see posts on this site from people trying to diagnose themselves, when the tests with a hospital consultant are quite simple and unobtrusive.
I had a test where I blew into a thing at the doctors and he checked something on the manchineel and he said it was fine also he Checked my lungs and said it was fine does this mean I don't have asthma ?
Can't say really, as I don't have access to the results. Sounds like you've got good lung function and probably no chest infection, which is certainly a good sign. But as far as I know, the only way to check for asthma is to compare your breathing before and after taking an inhaler; since the inhaler takes time to work, it's unlikely the doctor would do that test in the surgery. If you keep getting symptoms, you might want to ask your GP to refer you to a respiratory consultant to do the full range of tests which, as I said before, are all non-invasive and nothing to worry about. But let's hope it all clears up of its own accord and you don't need to do anything else!
Always get chest pain checked out but don't worry unduly, it may just be from prolonged hard coughing.
I get chest pain with asthma. I've had my heart checked but told my heart is fine. I wonder if it is muscular? It is annoying though. I hope you feel better soon.
Hi I'm foxy79
You shouldn't get chest pain to much and bad and not coughing colored flames it's singh of chest infection it's vest to see your doctor and get a antibiotics course and give sputum test to be safe as not scarring you but it leads to worser health issues from asthma hope you get better soon
I have chest pains when coughing a lot
Mine was just a constant cough if I was in cold air, it annoyed people so i saw a dr and was sent for a test and was told asthma. Hope you get some clarification as I'm still confused by all the variants .
If you cough violently it can strain your chest muscles – this is both concerning and very painful.
I use a technique called ‘huffing’ as huff is similar to the noise you make while doing it. It’s very simple and can loosen the thick mucus without resulting to violent coughing. Take a deep breath extending your stomach, then exhale in short sharp ‘huffs’, this pushes up the mucus to the top of your lungs and can then be expelled with a couple of light coughs. You may need to do it several times depending on how much mucus has built-up. Once yu have mastered the technique it is surprisingly effective. I used to cough so hard I’d often rupture one or more small blood vessels which resulted in coughing up blood, not to be recommended.
Hope this helps.
