Just thought I'd share with you I've managed to crack a rib this through my asthma cough, it could be it was weak after 4 weeks of coughing?
It resulted in my first trip to A&E in an ambulance with an asthma related issue, being put on a nebuliser and oral morphine.
The lesson learnt is go to GP sooner and insist on pred at the right high dose and may be I wouldn't be off work for over 4 weeks and suffering so much pain.
Ouch! You have massive sympathy from me - it's bad enough having aching overworked ribs, a broken one must really hurt. Hope you get better as quickly as possible. xx
Hi Janey, Might be worth asking your GP for a scan of your bones (DEXA scan). Taking steroids over a period of time can lead to Osteoporosis (thinning of bones). I had a scan when I was in my early 40s and found I had Osteoporosis. Took Fosamax for about 8 years and still take Calcium.
I wish I'd known sooner about this side effect of taking steroids. Medics are much more aware of it now and lots of asthmatics are put on medication to counteract bone loss.
Anyway, hope your rib heals quickly and you are able to get back to work.
poor you, i did that once, not nice,
try and get the pain managed so you can continue to deep breathe and cough as necessary, you dont want to end up with a chestinfection.
g xx
Hi,
I've got osteoporosis from all the steroids and keep on fracturing my ribs and spine, it's horrible. I agree about getting the scan. I've also got addisons disease from all the steroids but they have to be taken unfortunately. Hope you feel better soon xx
Feel for you. I hurt my back during a sneezing fit last year. Happened just before weekend away with friends. They could go walk about while I had to sit in the hotel with a book. At least I got a room with sea view.
