Prednisolone side effects

Hey everyone!

Wondering if anyone else has had the same problems as me with shorter courses (10 days) of prednisolone. Finished this course 5 days ago after an asthma flare up (Have seretide and salbutamol regularly). From 2 days in I have had worse side effects than ever before;

Sore mouth and sensitivity

Increased hunger

Increased thirst

Intense headaches on a daily basis

A rash on my face.

Clammy sweats with nausea

I have had these symptoms before when taking prednisolone but they have always gone as soon as I stopped taking them.

Anyone else??

Even after a short course of steroids I get nasty withdrawal symptoms, that's why the doctor gives me enough to taper down, so you slowly come off them and don't suffer withdrawal.

I had the same a week of full dose then taper down and I still got all the side effects :(

What dose are you on? I get crazy during / after I'm on high doses of prednisone or prednisolone. Headaches, sensitive skin, increased hunger, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, I get weepy and extra irritable, gain weight etc.

How long did you taper for? What was your tapering schedule?

I started on 40 for 5 days then tapered down for 5 days.

Yeah my moods terrible but probably because the side effects make me feel so lethargic and rubbish!

That's a decent tapering schedule. Have you been on several courses in the last year? If so, you could consider getting your cortisol tested just to make sure the prednisone isn't messing with your adrenal glands.

I developed adrenal insufficiency from too much prednisone so I always suggest people keep an eye on their cortisol if they're having symptoms-

I've used steroids at various times due to the same (flare ups/infections whatever..) but only for 2-3 weeks at any one time. I'm thankful that I've had very few sides effects with them, although the last time I took them my hunger was through the roof!! Like I HAD to eat lol! (I'm already a little over weight so this isn't something I'm ever pleased with and the common side effect 'moon face' makes me very paranoid!

Sometimes I get a bit moody, although because I am now back using the pill the hormones in this certainly help me. The up side for me is my skin becomes amazing whenever I use them (I think I have mild ezcmea- I don't notice it until I take them and suddenly have beautiful skin lol!)

Steroids are just horrible all round, giving us a false sense of wellness and side effects pages and pages long. Has ur medical team considered changing ur other meds (seretide maybe?) to see if they manage symptoms better without needing steroids as much?

Thankfully if only using occasionally your symptoms are right to wear off after use, and you may find, like me, that you get different side effects with each use, whether that's more or less.

My asthma is well managed with seretide I unfortunately got sinusitis which then affected my asthma! Well fingers crossed these side effects go!

Aw that's unlucky :( hopefully they at least help and clear it up for you.

Short term effects are obviously less than taking them continuously, but like others have said, depending on how many short courses you've had over recent months - a year, it could be effecting you worse.

Do you take anything else to manage the sinitus? The steroid nose sprays are great but I'm not sure if this would even help you personally or if you already take them. Just seems only way to reduce how often you need them is to see if they can manage your flare ups differently. I know it isn't always as easy at that, but good luck x

I'm prescribed nasal sprays regularly and flixonase drops! They all work for a while then nothing. Still havent these horrible side effects 7 days on wahhh

That doesn't sound good, have you had to take them much over the last year? Sounds like it might be worth mentioning to ur Dr to see if the other tests are worth looking into. Do the steroids help clear up what they're suppose to? I hope they are given your suffering from them :(
