Hi I’m on salbutamol as a reliever which I don’t find very effective, I also suffer bad cramps all over my body if I do have to use it, are there any other relievers for asthma available ?

Thanks Tracy

If I take salbutamol occasionally I am ok but if I take it more than once a day it can definitely give me cramps, mine are mainly in my legs.

Cramps can be a side effect to some asthma medication. I tend to get cramps anyway, always have, but I think my Symbicort made it a bit worse. I don’t get it with salbutamol, but then we are all different. I have never tried taking magnesium, just never got round to it but it is one off those things recommended to try for cramps. I was recommended using Epsom salts in my bath, but have never done that either as I am firmly a shower person. Generally I have seen potassium (as in bananas), calcium and/or magnesium suggested to assist with cramps. I did eat bananas daily some time ago to help me and I think I believed it helped at the time, but clearly not enough as that habit naturally came to an end quite a long while ago. So see if you can try a different medication, and have a go at trying supplements.

I'm not convinced you should be taking salbutamol every day. If your preventer isn't working - or if you don't have one - you need to see your GP or asthma nurse.

Hi I don’t take it every day but if I do then it’s not that effective, takes some of the tightness away, I usually need a few puffs which makes the cramps much worse, thanks for your reply x
