Hi everyone, I’m sure I saw a post on here recently from someone who has been prescribed a new Salamol reliever inhaler a dry powder inhaler with a dosage counter, instead of the usual blue inhaler. I can’t find the post now but want to share the name with my asthma nurse. Anybody able to help? Jo

Reliever inhaler with dosage counter
my sons is a disc power inhaler and it has a dose counter on it.
I have the Ventolin Accuhaler, disc shaped dry powder with a counter. They are double the strength of the mdi so you get 120 doses. I get comments about the cost occasionally but if the want to reduce cfc usage these are cfc free.
Thank you so much, I’ll write that name down and ask if a change is possible.
Hi LizPat30
I think that there are two dry powder salbutamol inhalers available in the UK and both have dose counters.
I tried in vain to get my GP to prescribe the Ventolin Accuhaler but she was unable to - probably because of cost ( although she didn’t say this!)
She did give me the other though, which is called an Easyhaler. I didn’t find it that great so I ordered my own Accuhaler from a reputable online pharmacy - I think it was about £12 or thereabouts.
I will be interested to hear if you can get an Accuhaler prescribed on the NHS!
I hope this helps.
👍😊
Thank you, it will be an interesting conversation, but I just think a reliever inhaler without a dose counter is such a bad design. But I suppose that’s down to cost!
I'm male, 71, and developed asthma for the first time last autumn. I'm 90% certain this was due to a drug I was prescribed to reduce the size of my prostate, called finasteride. There's nothing in the leaflet to confirm asthma as a side effect, but plenty of posters on Reddit claim that it caused asthma in them. It's also prescribed for baldness.
The asthma I had became very severe in the space of a few months. My doctor put me on Salamol, which was okay to start with, but became ineffective quickly. I was using it 14 times a day. I then was put on Relvar, which is a combination of a steroid antiinflammatory, and a long acting bronchodilator. This proved to be a godsend, and I only had to use it once a day.
Then, I made the connection with finasteride, and stopped taking the drug. My asthma just disappeared, and I didn't need the Relvar. However, it came back in the spring. I get hay fever, and it's possible the pollen reactivated the asthma. It's nothing like as bad as before, and I initially decided just to put up with it, as I don't like taking drugs. However, it worsened a little, so I'm now taking Relvar every day.
There are 2 dosages, 92/22 mcg, and 184/44 mcg. I take the minimum. Each inhaler has 30 doses. Hope this helps.
