Allergic to wine
I’m allergic to sulphites which are found in wines, beers, ciders, dried fruits and some fruit juices. Apparently asthmatics are more likely to be sensitive to sulphites
Fortified wines contain histamines. So it could be that.
Yes, I second this. In addition to asthma symptoms, I also get a streaming nose after wine.
I have heard of this problem a few times and Carriejen is correct it's the preservatives in young wines that can cause breathing problems. You might be ok with a aged red wine as the higher alcohol content in red wine means less preservatives are used. Check out the ingredients on organic wines, they should be sulphite-free. I have a mild reaction to vermouth for some reason.
You could always go alcohol free. It's bad for you anyway!
Here’s something to throw in to the mix - acid reflux the high acidity can trigger reflux which can cause an asthma attack) I stopped drinking wine for this reason) but it can also be the carbon dioxide in fizzy drinks such as prosecco coke etc
