Allergic to the plastic on air chamber/spacer!

Hi, I've not posted for a while and apologies for the random question!

My daughter is 2.5yrs old and was diagnosed aged 20months.

She takes Clenil twice daily through an air chamber and ventolin when needed.

Since she's been on the Clenil she has on and off had red/white spots on her face (nothing in her mouth). They are particularly bad at the moment so I took her to see our duty nurse this morning as I thought it was the Clenil causing the reaction. I got told that it wasn't the Clenil but that Evie is allergic to the plastic/rubber on the air chamber. I'm not convinced!!!

I was told to make an appt to see the asthma nurse (who I wanted to see today) to see if Evie would be able to use the air chamber that goes in the mouth rather than over it!

Has anyone else ever experienced this with their child's skin?

Evie's only other allergy is factor 50 kids sun cream, but she is ok with adults factor 30!

Im not really going to be of much help here at all I dont think as I cant actually respond to what your massively asking for BUT... I have for the last year or so moved onto the new (recently new) Vortex non electrostatic holding chamber, basically, its one that stops all allergens from getting into the aerochamber itself, so if that could be a possibility to your little ones allergies then this could solve it. also the bit that goes into your mouth is (i find) a different type of plastic. On top of this, they have also got amazing little designs on masks like ducks etc that attach to the aero chamber to help children take their medication and it is also a good type of material to help against allergies. As far as I know it isnt made of latex either.

Maybe you could research the chamber online, I know at one stage it was put onto this website on the main page as it was the newest invention to the asthmatic world.

You can get it on prescription as well so you dont have to pay out for it.

Thank-you I will look into the chambers online like you have suggested! At least I can go to the appt prepared then as its not until the 5th November.

I'm willing to try anything that will clear her face up, it looks sore and horrible and the nurse wouldn't prescribe anything!

It is indeed better to go in prepared, kind of shows the medics that your not willing to take any rubbish from them.

As for the soreness on her face bless her, have you tried any types of emolient creams or aqueous (sorry for poor spelling) creams as it'll dehydrate her face and take some of the post allergy get skin roughness away hopefully. One thing I would say about creams though is never use e45 cream as if your little one has bad allergies they are highly likely to be allergic to the sheep's/lamb fat that is in it. Also called lanolin. This will make her face twice as bad.

All else fails, could you not see another nurse or go about getting some hydrocortisone cream...it'll b a push as not many medics like to give steroidal creams for the face as it can thin the skin but it's weighing up which is best at the moment, short term potential thin skinning or sore irritated post allergy skin.

Just a thought, is she using an aerochamber with a mask ?

It could be the clenil steroid inhaler causing the skin problems..... so a mouth piece spacer would be better...

Hi

Just a thought would the marks be broken blood vessels?

My son always gets marks on his face that look a bit like broken blood vessels ( not sure if they are) but when he is struggling with his asthma his face flares up!

I hope you find the answer.

Thank-you all for your words of advice and comments.

We made an appointment to see Evie's asthma nurse; the original nurse was wrong; it is a reaction to the Clenil steroid not the plastic.

We now put Vaseline on her face before giving the Clenil, wash it off and then apply epaderm. This seems to have cleared it up! Xx
