Asthma and viral infection help

Hi I'm new to this site but I said I'd post as I'm running out of options . My 15 year old son has been getting a really bad cough every year for the past 6 years. Everytime he gets it He ends up missing school for 2-3 weeks as his cough is very uncontrollable and takes hold of him day and night. At the minute he has been off for two weeks is in agony with his ribs and stomach and is totally exhausted. He was at the doctor and hospital this week has had two nebulisers and 6 puffs of his inhaler every two hours leaving him shaky and with heart palpitations. He has been given steroids for three days and had X-ray to rule out phnumonia . Told he has a viral infection but that antibiotics won't help. What do I do now ? He's in bits and I'm sick of different diagnoses every year. I have tried nasal inhalers for post nasel drip, salt rooms, cough suppressants and cough syrups to help bring up mucus garlic lemon and ginger remedies inhalers and steroids and antihistamines but nothing helps and eventually he starts to recover after weeks of being out of action. He's a big 6ft 3 rugby player about 17 stone and just can't keep going on like this . Any ideas about what us going on with him or where to go from here will be appreciated I have exhausted all avenues and am just as worn out myself . Thanks

Hi Amandaalice

Welcome to the form, sorry to hear you're worn out.

I've asked our Asthma nurse team your query and Suzanne has a couple of questions. Does your son take a regular preventer inhaler every day, or does he ever accidentally miss a dose?

It may be worth asking the doctor if he can have a 5 day course of steroids (adult dosage) as he now has the build of an adult.

It might be worth having an asthma review to check his medication doses with his GP.

If you would like further advice and support, please feel free to give our nurses team a ring on 0300 222 5800 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).

Take care,

Dita
