Hi, my 11 year old son is going to start Nucala injections for severe asthma. Does anyone take this? I'm a bit worried about side effects etc x

Nucala
Hello. I hadn't heard of Nucala so googled it. Very interesting results. It is a newly approved drug very similar to Xolair which has been in use for several years now. My son started Xolair treatment about 2 years ago and it turned his life around. He was able to take up sport again and attend school (and now university) full time. He is still on maximum asthma medication and had a few really bad bouts of asthma ( usually triggered by a cold or other illness) but apart from that leads a very active life.
Xolair doesn't work for everyone, maybe it's the same for Nucala? But definitely worth a try if it's been recommended by your child's consultant. Re. Side effects. We were told my son may have a reaction when the injections were administered but he didn't. He's never had any side effects. But every one is different.
There is an article on Xolair etc medication on this asthma site. I found it via Google but it may be under Research.
Good luck and I hope things improve for your child.
Thank you so much for your reply. Xolair was also discussed for my son. I think Nucala is a similar type of drug. The consultant is hoping it will be suitable for his particular allergies but he has told us that it might not work as it doesn't work for everyone. I have been quite concerned about side effects etc and have read that some people who take xolair suffer from pain after injection, fatigue, headaches etc so it is great to hear that it has only been a positive experience for your son. There seems to be a few new drugs on the go for asthma at the moment. I just hope it works for my son. Would be great to see him enjoying sports on a regular basis and reducing the amount of steroids that he has to take to keep it under control! Xx
