Broncho Thermalplasty

Hi I just finished up with my regular check up at that hospital and he brought up having a bronco thermalplasty done to help relieve my symptoms has anyone else heard of this or have been through this? any extra information would be incredibly helpful and reassuring.

Hi. I am also considering. They do 3 procedures over 3 months under sedation during bronchoscopy , usually in patient but 10% need to stay overnight in the hospital. First week after the procedure your asthma can get worse . They have been doing it for 7-8 years or so, some people still feel fine after 7 years- it helps to some but not the others as any other treatment.

Unfortunately i haven't been given any information yet from the hospital but I'm considering it as I've found that my asthma has been severely deteriorating over the past couple of years and at this point I'm ready to try anything. the way the procedure is just seems highly invasive and uncomfortable.

I agree with you , it's quite invasive and no guarantee that it will work... My asthma has deteriorated over last year as well so I am considering too. What type of asthma have you got? I have eosinophilic asthma and was offered a choice between thermoplasty or waiting till next year to try mepolizumab ( it should be licensed next year)

I'm unsure the 'proper name' for the asthma I've got I have been intubated before and have been moved on to stage five treatment with xolair injections and IM steroid injectors every 5 - 6 weeks, my Dr is thinking of trying me on mexotride (sp?) but he feels that im too young for that (im 25). he has suggested that the bronco thermoplasty is the next thing to try as everything else either dosent work or works for a small amount of time.

Just to let you know, I have had this procedure. you have one every four weeks roughly. I have severe asthma which has been very hard to control for a number of years, I have been on every type of medication there is, I have been picking up 12 prescriptions each month and that's without anti-biotics for regular chest infections.

This does not work for everyone and other peoples experiences will differ from mine but all I can do is relate my own version

The procedure is no different than having a bronchoscopy, the first one I was pretty much awake for but dosed up to the eyeballs, the second and third I was asleep, I did stay in hospital the first and second time but the third I went home, my last procedure was in December 2014 and I was told that by the end of January I would start to feel the benefits, this did not happen until the middle of February 2015 and for the last four months I have felt better than I have done for the last eight years, I still take some inhalers, but feel more normal than I ever did with my asthma. just remember this is not a cure it reduced my symptoms dramatically.
