Pred and unable to sleep

Bluebusadventures profile image

Hello. I often end up on several courses of prednisolone over the autumn and winter due to chest infections. Usually needing more than one course of steroids to settle my asthma back down

I struggle to sleep with pred, especially for the first 2 - 3 nights. Does anyone have suggestions for helping?

Take medication as early as possible in the day.

Yes as early as possible. I fine on a 5 day course no side effects. Just finishing a 9 day course. The insomnia kicked in on day 6/7. Hope and pray you can get some sleep.

I've been known to take meds at 5-6ish and go back to sleep after.

It worked with hydrocortisone for me as I needed to take it early but didn't want or need to properly wake up at that time.

That was a much lower dose of steroid however, and could be taken on an empty stomach. If you do this with pred, have a snack or something first - it's rough on nothing at all, and the pharmacist should hopefully have told you to take it after food.

Alot of people find it hard to sleep with taking them at night I allways take them first thing in the morning once I'm up as it used to affect my sleep aswell I'm not a good sleeper either way but found taking them in the morning is better x

Taking it at bedtime works for me. It happened by accident once because a late in the day doc appointment then a delay at the pharmacy. It worked so well that I do it that way every time now.

From the first day on Pred. I have insomnia as do many others. I take diphenhydramine, a first generation antihistamine, so very sedative but also, for me helps my asthma. You can find it in NYTOL.

Like Oldandgray said... an antihistamine (Phenergan) helps me go to sleep when on Pred as well as with allergies but also taking it as early as poss in the day as others here have said.
